To Double Barrel Or Not To Double Barrel...

im going to take OH's surname but change my name by deed pole after the wedding so that my maiden name becomes one of my middle names ;-}0

OH's ex wife is changing her name back to her maiden name (no problems there!!!), but she's also changing their daughter's name so that she is double barrelled, OH says he's got no probs with that, but I personally think DDs name should not be changed until she is 16 when she is old enough to make the decision herself.
My OH's ex changed her name back as well and his DD changed hers at the same time but she was 16 so it was up to her and as they weren't married when she was born it was her name anyway. OH was quite hurt as he only found out about it afterwards.
I'm not sure how it would affect your OH's daughter's passport or doctor though as it would have to be done by deed poll to be official and until she is 16 those with parental responsibility would have to give consent. My boss's daughter is known by her step dad's surname but had to have her passport issued in her "real" name.Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended

I called the passport office last week (she's only had her new passport for about 6 weeks) and they said that there would be no problem if holidays were booked in the passport name - then when it comes to renewing when it runs out, they can send the docs showing her name change.
I'm jiggered if we're shelling out for another passport just after we've got one - they're about £45-£50 just for a kids one - if the ex wants her to have a new one she can pay it (and the associated costs for signing pics etc) and fill in the forms herself!!0 -

I totally agree and there must be some costs involved with the deed poll document that she would need to do change it officially. Not sure if your OH would have to sign that he agrees as well.
My ex wanted me to give parental responsibility for my son to his GF and haven't heard anything since he found out how much it was going to be. Their son has a double barelled surname and it's a real mouthful not sure how he'll get on at school

A friend of mine did this. She didn't want to lose her name completely and her first name didn't go with his surname. So they "squished". He changed his by deedpoll a couple of weeks before the wedding, then when they got married she just took "his" name.
My wife was happy to lose a surname that no-one could pronounce, so there was no problem there...0 -
please leave a paper trail as doing family research it can get into one hell of a mess think ahead 100 years and some poor soul trying to locate their great great gran etc.;)my bark is worse than my bite!!!!!!!!0

The other option is to come up with something completely new. Similar to "squishing", but not related to either name.
My sister's friend's dad did this when he re-married. He'd already been half of "Mr and Mrs X", the marriage didn't work and he didn't want that again. So he became half of "Mr and Mrs Y" instead. (Bizarrly, though, the name they chose was double-barrelled!) My sister's friend, and her sister, took the new name, too.
This was you could personalise it a bit. E.g. if you had a romantic holiday together in the Italian capital you could become Mr and Mrs Rome. Or if you met in these forums you could become Mr and Mrs Martin. Etc.0 -
i have friends who , if double barrelling, and no i'm not joking, would be
mr and mrs fox-hunt!!!
i think they've decided that it would be child abuse to future generations if they did that.

I'm double barreling as we had our son before marriage and gave him both our names. I would never lose my name as I am the last of the line.0

Really interested in reading about this issue, especially about coming up with something totally new, any more experiences of this? My situation is that I am fine with taking his name, in fact I want to (for family reasons I don't want to go into) but that will give me exactly the same name as his sister which freaks him out. Double-barrelling might sound a bit silly so maybe we'll both change. It's not a very common thing to do and I'd be interested in reading other people's experiences of it, whether their own or people they know.Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!
