Cheapest way to get broadband for Xbox Live??

I have just moved into rented accomodation and I am looking to get broadband solely for playing on Xbox live and was looking for the cheapest way to get this?
The property had a BT line but the previous tenant must have switched it over to another service provider so now BT would want £125 to reconnect it. As it is not my house and I am reluctant to pay this. I don't even have use for a phone line other than to get broadband. My flat is in a non-cable area so that is not an option.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

do you have a computer? only thing i can think of is mobile broadband, with internet connection sharing set on the PC, but i don't know if this would work (wifi enabled pc as access point?), or if it would significantly affect pings, need someone better than i to advise on the practicalities...Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

i have been on xbox live for 3 years now. previously i had AOL on 2mgs bb and it was absolutely crap when playing online cod4 or halo. people wont die because of the ping. now i switched to o2 bb and they are absolutely brilliant, i took their 16 mgs bb for £15. if you have o2 payasgo or contract the price goes down by £5 so you will be getting 16 mgs for £10. But you need BT. the bt people are !!!!!. this happened to me, i moved into my house and called bt to get my new number as i saw bt telephone socket on the wall. bt flately refused that their is an active line on my address. then i got my land line phone, connected to the socket and to my surprise i had a tone. i called bt from the same phone and guess what they still refused and said i would be charged £125. i had to repeat twice to tell them that im calling from the same line which they say is not there. so if you have a bt socket on the wall then you do have a line. if not then cable. the previous guy living might have a different service provider but there should be BT. check again. and o2 are grt for bb.its unlimited too.0

If you have not got a working telephone line then ADSL is out of the window unless you have one installed. This leave a cable based provider (not always available in all properties) or mobile based. You have very few options due to the lack of telephone line. Some people have posted on other areas that they have managed to sign up to sky for the tv, talk and BB bundle and Sky have stated that they will refund the cost of the BT line installation.0

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll just go for mobile broadband and try hook xbox up through laptop. Don't want to pay £125 because previous tenant changed provider to talk talk0

Hiya,
If your line is with talktalk, maybe you can just sign up with them for the free up to 8 meg BB, I think it costs about 16.50 for the phone line but that includes some calls and the BB so no more to payThey will send you a modem for free or I think you can pay £20 for a wireless router. There is a connection fee though  I'm not sure if they still charge it if you line is already talktalk but it costs about £30.

Thanks but it'd cost over £200 to go with them as I'd need to reconnect with BT then pay cancellation fee of £70 as need to take 12 month contract with BT then change it to Talk Talk0 -
