I have heard that you can get wireless broadband without the need for a BT phone line. Does anyone have any idea how I'd go about this?

Welcome to MSE Lucy.
If your talking about Wireless Broadband that allows you to declutter your home by letting you get rid of all your network cables, then you would normally require a BT Line or similar and a wireless router, unless you happen to live in a Cable Area. If you do Virgin Media offer Broadband only (No Line Rental Required) see:

Your need to buy a Wireless Router.

I'm not very technically minded, does this mean I could only get it on my mobile and not my laptop? Its laptop internet I want, just hate paying BT for a phone line I'd never use.0

Most of the major networks offer Mobile Broadband in some shape or form. You just plug a Dongle/Modem directly into your pc and off you go. Its completely seperate from your Mobile.
3mobile have some good offers.0
