Lloyds..flippin furious!

I have a student account with Lloyds, and in it is a balance of around £800.

My Dad recently passed away, and as the executor of his Will Nat West sent me a cheque for £4500 from the closure of Dad's bank account. This money was to be paid to Mum when it cleared. I also had a cheque from a matured endowment for £2000 (its complex!)

Yesterday I went into the bank and deposited both cheques. I asked the girl at the counter if the £4500 could be transferred into my Mums Nat West account when it cleared to save me coming back to the bank, she made some enquiries and said no, it couldnt.

This afternoon I went to buy something and my card was declined. Worried I went to the cashpoint for a statement which showed I had a balance of £2800, but available to withdraw was Nil.

I called the bank who tell me its to do with the cheques I paid in and they are holding my balance until they clear on the 24th!! So even though my account is in the black, and I'm paying cheques in, I cant access my own cash for at least 4 days.

Furious I ask to speak to a supervisor who thinks there has been some problem with the entry at the branch I deposited the cheques in, but even so she can see the amounts waiting to clear. She is at a loss to explain why I cant get to my own money and will have to chase it up with my branch tomorrow.

As soon as this mess is sorted out Im closing my student account with them and going elsewhere

  • That's just crazy and so not what you need right now!

I'd love to hear what explanation they give if any...

Bad news I'm afraid - pretty much every bank I have ever had dealings with is capable of this kind of mistake! Whether it's changing my overdraft limit seven times within one week (oh the charges!), closing my account by accident, failing to read any one of the 6 letters I sent explaining my change of postcode or any number of other issues, I don't think there is a bank out there that doesn't do something wrong every so often. The real test is how they deal with it - if they resolve it and offer you an apology you'll be doing well!

And I am currently on the phone to them yet again as they have still not sorted this out, and I have no money. Now they are saying friday!!! I have had to fight tooth and nail to speak to a manager who is now supposedly on the phone to my branch while I hold.....

I shall be down there the second this is sorted out and closing the account.

I put a cheque for 7k in Lloyds TSB last year, and luckily got a receipt for it.It didn't appear in my bank at all, so I rang them and they admitted it was their mistake, but it took 3 weeks for them to sort it and me get my money:mad:  Whilst I was depositing it the cashier was clearly not concentrating and blabbing on about different accounts, and omitted to put the cheque through:mad:
You have to actually ask for a receipt now, but I do every time in case of further c0ck ups:mad:

Yes, luckily. They have now told me the cheque for Dad's estate was "out of date" and its being posted back to me

I have called Nat West who issued the cheque and they have categorically stated that the cheque is in date.

So now I have to wait until the cheque returns to me before I can do anything, and in the meantime Dad's funeral bills remain unpaid

I thought cheques were valid for 6 months? (They've usually been valid for that long when I've had to write/cash them.)
