I got my compost bin from Harrow council for free. they just left it when they collected my other waste one morning..
call your local council and they should just give you one. mine has a little flap at the bottom where i can shovel out the fresh stuff from
Scrimping and saving!0 -
I used to make all kinds of compost bins by recycling bits of timber especially pallets, even an old dog kennel and fake bee hive, but one of my favourites for small gardens was a small wooden slatted bench/seat, with lift off lid to put grass cuttings, leaves or garden waste, kept an old plastic kitchen bin for decomposing kitchen organic matter as it can smell a little until partially composted! Then even that can go under the bench. In the winter the bench gives of warmth, and if covered with a thick sheet of plastic acts like a hot house, to help protect more vunerable plants during spells of frost.0

Unfortunately Aberdeenshire council aren't that generous; all they do is send us to the waste aware scotland website for subsidised compost bins. They are cheaper than elsewhere and do include a free kitchen caddy so it's still quite a good deal.
I was wondering how this thread got resurrected and then I spotted that it was included in Martins email :j Wow! I never expected that to happen.0 -

I'm impressed with your ingenuity and I would love to be able to do this but I am lacking in handy skills. I suspect if I built my own compost heap it would fall to bits before I'd even added anything
and that includes your bench system even though it sounds idiot proof :rotfl:
I think I'll suggest it to my brother-in-law though as he is a builder and may be able to help

we've just bought that one and it seems sturdy enough & was simple to put together:T the little kitchen caddy is very useful too:D It took about 2 weeks to arrive after ordering:T :T
That's exactly where Aberdeenshire council sent me too. I'm considering getting the Komp 250 as it looks to be the most compact. However if any of the experts can see potential problems with it I'm happy to listen to advice

And the free caddy nearly makes up for going for the second most expensive bin too :money:

Hello Glitzkiss
I also have a small garden and have bought a compost bin that composts kitchen as well as garden waste including cooked food, meat and fish scraps. My tiny lawn of grass clippings goes in as well as weeds and green clippings. It looks neat and tidy so doesn't clutter up the place. I only got it recently, but so far I am really pleased with it. Take a look at http://www.compostwizzard.co.uk0 -
Hape,
I really like the look of that one.
