A cheap meal is to roast some veg (carrot, parsnip, tomato) with herbs and a drizzle of oil, then mix it into rice/couscous/lentils....August grocery challenge: £50

This is healthy and delicious for a family of 4 -5
Boil 1 lb/500g lentils (£1.20) until soft and strain into a large shallow oven dish.
Meanwhile fry a large onion (40p) and 2 fat cloves of garlic (10p) in 1 tablespoon of olive oil (10p) until soft and golden. Add half tube of tomato puree (25p) a fat teaspoon of Marmite (20p) and 2 teaspoons of mixed dried herbs (30p) with enough water to make a thickish sauce. Add 4 ounces/100g of strong cheese (50p) and mix well. Add to strained lentils and mix very, very well. Top with 8 ounces/200g of strong cheese(£1.00) and bake in a hot oven until bubbly and golden. Serve with 12ounces/300g grated carrot (60p) mixed with the juice of 1 lemon (15p)0 -
Fragrant and quite simply divine for 5
Fry 1 large onion (20p) with 2 cloves of fat garlic(20p) in 2 table spoons of sunflower oil (30p) until soft and golden. Meawhile peel 2 inches of fresh root ginger(30p) and chop into very fine matchsticks. Core 2 green chillis,(30p) remove seeds and slice very finely.Add to onions with 2 teaspoons of freshly ground coriander seeds (40p), 1teaspoon of black mustard seeds,(10p) 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric(15p) and 2-3 bay leaves (15p). Fry for 1 minute and add 3 large tins of tomatoes(£1.20). Leave to gently simmer for 40 minutes then add 1 and a half teaspoons of salt (10p) and 1 tablespoon of dessicated coconut. Simmer for a further 5 minutes.
Serve with 12 ounces/300g of Basmati rice(£1.30)0 -
Home made pizza for 4- 6
Buy 2 supermarket pizza base mixes and make up according to instructions - leave to rise.(£1.30) for about 30 - 40 minutes
Fry 1 large onion (30p)with 2 fat cloves of garlic (10p)in 2 tablespoons of olive oil(30p) until soft and golden. Add 2 large tins of tomatoes(80p) and 1 tube of tomato puree(40p). Add 1 teaspoon of salt(5p), 1 teaspoon of sugar(5p), 2 teaspoons of Marmite - optional (30p), and 3 teaspoon of Italian dried herbs (40p). Simmer together for 10 minutes and leave to cool.
Spread cooled mixture on a pizza base rolled out to fit a large oven baking tray that has been oiled with olive oil to prevent the dough from sticking.
Spread with 300g of strong grated cheese (£1.20) and bake in a hot oven (220 degrees or gas mark 8) for about 15 - 20 inutes or until the dough is well risen and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
Optional extras added before cheese:-
Tin of anchovies £1.50, olives £1.00, capers £1.50, Mozarella instead of cheddar an extra £1.50, 100g of ham£1.00 - £1.500 -

in scotland there is plenty noodles in tesco and asda but they have pushed them up to 10p0 -
For 4 people
This is simply lovely with crusty bread ( 50p), butter(30p) and a small side salad (£1.00)
Open a tin of tuna in oil (£1.00)and empty on to a large baking tray. Add some potatoes which have been part boiled in their skins (80p) and cut into small chunks, a large tin of sweet corn (80p)and a bunch of chopped spring onions(65p)Some sort of magic takes place when roasted in a fairly hot oven for about 15 minutes, turning freqently. Serve hot or cold

Minted fish burgers for 4
Flake 8- 12 ounces/250g - 300g of cooked white fish (£1.30) (Coley, basa or pollack are cheap and will do fine) into a mixing bowl. Add a small tin of mushy peas,(50p) 1 and one half pounds of cooked mashed potato (left overs will do(30p) and a fat teaspoon of mint jelly(10p). Mix thoroughly.
Shape into for balls and flatten to 1 inch discs
Dip in beaten egg(20p) and then into bread crumbs made by whizzing a couple of slices of well done toast (10p)in a food processor or similar
Shallow fry in hot sunflower or corn oil(20p) .
Serve with a lemon wedge and oven chips (£1.00)0 -
once a week when I'm on a late shift we have -
39p value spagetti
48p Passata
Garlic paste about 10p (tube is 50p)
basil (from garden seeds were 30p)
salt and black pepper (tesco value about 1p)
serves all 4 of us for just over a pound!
sometimes we have 50p garlic bread as well and value choc ices for pud!Best Threads -

Chopped ham on bread, when Sainsbury's still had 3 packs of rolls for £1 this came out at about 55p, but they've cut that offer now so it'll be more now, but not much more.
It's also incredibly quick and easy, and you can take it with you as a packed lunch.0
