    This is what we called odds and sods pie back in the 1970s when there was too many days left until payday and the mortgage rate was 15% !!!.I used to line the dish with some shortcrust pasty as well then if there was any left over my late OH would take it to work and reheat for his lunch the next day It filled two adults and two small children up very well.Its suprising but true that necessity is the mother of invention and boy could I invent stuff for us to eat.In 1971 we had an income of £112 per month and a mortgage of £60 per month.Sounds a pittance by todays standards doesn't it so with two small children not a lot of spare cash was available but we never went hungry and I never forgot those tough times and have always had a good store cupboard to fall back on:D
  • I always streeetched sausages by cutting them in half down the middle when making toad in the hole and it filled the family up and I had bangers left over for an other meal
  • I always slice sausages into pieces before I put them in toad in the hole or pasta etc, because it makes it look that there is more than there actually is.

    One of my faves.....

    Jock pie (pack of 4 from Iceland for a quid)
    Left over mash
    Fried onions
    Instant gravy.

    Can all be cooked in the microwave apart from the mash & onions which is cooked up the day before when I do bangers & mash.

    Costs around 55p

  • Hey guys. Not sure of the cost per head for this but it can be amended to your budget.

    Each week I buy loads of vegetables in the supermarket and stock up on tomato pasta sauce when I can. I tend to always buy onions, courgette, peppers, then mix up whether I get mushrooms, green peas, mange touts, sweetcorn, whatever is on offer so use what you like.

    I fry all the veg on some olive oil (about £1.20 for a medium bottle if my memory serves) and add pepper and anything else like garlick, chilli, coriander, herbs depending on my budget and what I feel.

    I add a jar of 1/2 decent tomato pasta sauce (which I buy in bulk when they're on offer so never more than £1 each) and then either a cheap value range sauce for between 10 and 20p or some tinned tomatoes. I add stuff left over such as tomato pur!e or pesto to give an extra kick and some soy sauce for richness. Let it simmer down as much or as little as you want. You can add leftovers too or put some meat in in the first stage if you want.

    I make a massive panful and use it over a few days. With rice (44p for a bag of tescos cheapest) or make a pasta bake with cheese on. I can be a side dish to some meat or a bigger meal.

    This is really tasty and you can modify it how you want so it needn't always taste the same. It's healthy and colourful too.

    Another thing I make is veg with an Asian style sauce. I tend to use mushrooms, onions, green beans, mange touts and sweetcorn so you can see that there is an overlap. Fry with plenty of pepper and add lots of soy sauce. You can get a big bottle of soy sauce for £1.40 from tesco and over a month since buying it I'm only half way through. Sometimes I buy a 50p packet sauce to add, sometimes I leave it just soy or sometimes a add a squirt of honey. Sesame seeds go nicely too. Serve with rice or noodles.

    Ok some if things may be expensive but you might already have some in your cupboards. I also check the reduced section to add meet-even cold cuts thrown in at the last minute if you want some protein. If your really stuck, just tge soy, rice and onion is enough.

    I think the key to these cheap meals is using strong flavours that can be bought cheaply and used minimally to liven things up.

    I love this sort of food and it is certainly cheap. I tend to do the same thing with curry sauce. The value one is about 30p and makes at least two meals (could stretch to 3 or 4). I don't eat meat so the protein is sometimes 2 hard boiled eggs each or fish and if really flush some prawns.
    I serve it with rice or potatoes (boiled or roast) and sometimes just with bread to dip into it.
    I eat this sort of thing most days alternated with egg and chips or fish and salad.
    I think the only thing I possibly lack is calcium as I don't drink much milk however I do eat yoghurt (home made of course), and iron so I try to eat beetroot some days as well.

    - 4 cups of value pasta 50p Aldi
    - 1/2 bag frozen peas 50p farmfoods
    - 300ml single or double cream £1 sainsburys
