in the past i have used www.keepvid.com and i believe the latest real player can download a video clip from any site that plays one including youtube.

It works on my windows box brilliantly - I haven't managed to find a version for my linux box, although MoviePlayer works well for me.

I have also used Orbit downloader for grabbing flash videos - works well with Firefox too.

So when you play YouTube flv downloads with this software are they searchable/seekable?

I haven't tried youtube videos (will give it a go in a min) but yes the .flv files I have used are searchable - I would imagine youtube videos are the same

You can download Youtube movies in mp4 format, I've tried it and it works.

If you use Firefox there is an add-on called download helper which allows you to do this from an icon on the toolbar.
