No joy on switching router off/on. Yes ISP is 192.168.1.1. Turning house upside down now for disk - no [guy installed it for us] but have a disk for setting up wireless connection - will go to quickstart link.

Are you using a Ethernet Cable or the USB cable to connect the router to the new pc?
It seems from the quickstart guide you can via both. posted by tonyhague in posts above.
If USB you will need the disk to load the Drivers.
The ethernet should work straight out or at the most a quick reboot of the Router or PC.0 -
ok - internet icon in task bar shows 'currently connected to unidentified network. access limited connectivity'.
is it possible Belkin router does not work with vista as originally set to XP?
as u can tell I'm a pc dummy, am only just keeping up with this -please KISS.
Cable is a CAT5.

Unlikely that it's incompatible.
Can you go into the 'Control Panel' and then 'Network & Sharing Centre'. From the menu on the left click 'Manage network connections'.
A new window should open and you'll see 'Local Area Connection'. Right click on it and select 'Status', then click the 'Details' button.
Tell me the following values from that window:
IPv4 IP Address
IPv4 Default Gateway
IPv4 DNS Server

That's the problem then. Your machine isn't receiving and IP address from the router. I suspect the DHCP is switched off.
You need to assign an IP address manually.
Go back into the 'Control Panel' and then 'Network & Sharing Centre'. From the menu on the left click 'Manage network connections'.
A new window should open and you'll see 'Local Area Connection'. Right click on it and this time select 'Properties'.
The 'Local Area Connection Properties' window will open. You'll see a list of items with tick boxes by them. Look down the list until you see 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)'. Select it (don't untick it), and click the 'Properties' button'
Click 'Use the following IP address' and enter the following details.
IP Address: 192.168.1.50
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Click 'Use the following DNS server address' and enter the following details.
Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
Alternate DNS Server: Leave blank
Click OK. Then Close. Wait 30 seconds, then try Internet Explorer.- Google is your friend, use it :rolleyes:0 -
nope no go - I've gone through that twice [in case I did it wrong].

It's possible then that you're router has some extra security on it such as mac address filtering.
It may be worth getting the person who set it up on the phone.- Google is your friend, use it :rolleyes:0 -
I appreciate your input. Will contact the guy tomorrow.
