We are in diffs - new HP desktop with wired connection to broadband router. Unable to connect to Ineternet. Old desktop removed this a.m. used same wired connection with no problems. Thought I could just unplug cable from one and plug into new one .. but no joy. Any suggestions appreciated as to what I can do? Posting via OH's laptop.Thanks.

the new computer running vista by any chance? Normally, you should be able to plug in and go, but...vista...sometimes struggles getting an ip from the router for some reason.
plug in the computer that works, double click on the '2 little computers' icon on the bottom right, click support and reply to this message with the IP address and default gateway. hopefully then someone who had more patience with vista will be able to tell you how to set up a connection manually, probably throwing opendns servers in as a bonusUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

You did turn off the router, connected new pc, then turn router back on?
If not router will be trying to see old PC.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
did you find out if it had an IP address like tony said?
It's possible that for some reason your DHCP server is OFF on the router, and that your old PC had a fixed IP. It's also possible that your Router has Mac Address filtering enabled.
You'll need to check out the router config to find out.- Google is your friend, use it :rolleyes:0 -
are we guessing the operating system? i still guess vista, and i don't use it, so don't know how to set up a connection (any vista users feel free to jump in at this point...)
i know your router's IP address should be 192.168.1.1, name/password admin, quickstart guide here (pdf) The disk which came with the router may help in configuring vista, as suggested by the guide, and for dns servers, regardless of isp, 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220, and i'd set a manual IP address for the PC of 192.168.1.99Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
spud - think so, but just backtracking to be sure.
