You may have noticed that I too have asked a couple of questions...!

For those that don't know the questions......
    "Why do you object ??"
"Why does he object so much to someone wanting to watch his tv ? "

    Silence...says it all !

Maybe Babu is reflecting on his/her lifesyle....or finding something else trivial to antagonise the neighbours with.

You know...this kind of thing really get my goat ! When there's no obvious reason for the complaint.

How in god's name is putting up a small sat dish going to drastically reduce Babu's lifestyle so much that he/she has to put forward an action commitee to put a stop to it.?

I have neighbours who are building atm. One's doing an extension and the other a conservatory. Both have been reported to various council bodies for one reason or another. Neither are doing anything that would alter anyone's lifestyle in any way, neither affecting light / property boundaries...nothing

Whoever reported them doesn't even have a legitimate complaint about anything. Wasted the councils time and money investigating the complaint.
Mysterious people in the background, cowardly hiding behind the curtains with nothing better to do with their time but cause complaints.

I want to see fines imposed on those who file nonsense complaints. I could phone the council and tell them next door has painted the house blue and pink....and someone would have to come out to investigate. Nothing would be done to me.

I'm afraid Babu is copping for the fall-out from my friends disputes....I'm sorry ! :o

    But ....Please...GET A LIFE !!

The reason I object to a satellite dish being installed is that as we collectively own a share of the freehold of the block of flats all owners have a common interest in the block. We also have a lease that was drawn up when the flats were originally built which does not allow any external antennae to be installed.

I am not trying to antagonise my neighbours - I just happen to be one the 2 directors of the block and as a result we have to make a decision in the interest of all other flat owners.

My lifestyle is not going to change if my neighbour puts up a satellite dish.

What I really need to know is whether UK leases/laws can be superseded by European resolutions. The tenant is German - he has stated that he requires access to television programmes in his own language.

We have already informed him that a satellite dish cannot be installed against the lease and have suggested that he can have access to cable television or he can install a dish indoors. He is unwilling to do so.

The comment "it's a block of flats, they're ugly anyway so a satellite dish won't make it any worse" isn't very helpful and doesn't actually answer my original question. Anyhow, thank you for all your replies.
  • Does the cable provide any meaningful programming in German ? I doubt it - so you're not actually meeting his need, by offering that as an alternative.

Leaves him with the antenna indoors scenario (which is doable provided he has a window with the right aspect).

His window faces south-east. I don't know if he can get a good line of sight with the particular satellites he wants to access.
  • Hi Babu, I am writing this at 4:15am on a saturday morning because the neighbours across the road decided to see how loud their stereo would go and the police were not interested when my partner first called them. After over an hour I managed to find the local council's 24hr noise complaint number where upon the noise stopped bfore they coud "investigate". So I know how annoying those who do not wish to play by the rules can be.

Firstly, a South east aspect is probably good for installation of a dish. What the engineer would probably do is to lean out the window with a Hilti drilland fix the dish that way. Sky engineers are notorious for cutting as many corners as possible (this is based on my brother having worked for them, he left because of poor materials being supplied and the pressure to get instalations done as quickly and cheaply to the company as possible)

Seondly, planning permission is required for fitting of dishes to flatted properties (it is in Scotland anyway) it states that permission may be granted for up to 3 satellite dishes, the fourth application would automatically be turned down on the grounds that a roof dish to serve all properties should be installed. THis is very rarely implemented but it is an avenue you could investigate.
  • I think that the satellite he is trying to reach is the ASTRA one but I could't be sure. TRy Googling it

FirstClassMale, I'm sorry to hear that - no one needs to put up with nuisance neighbours that have no consideration for those around them.
  • The flat I lived in also had a ban on satellite dishes being installed. The actual wording was something like - 'being attached to the building' in my lease.

However, as I was on the ground floor with a garden, I was able to fix one in the garden outside my door to a post in the ground.

The managers of the building stated the ruling was to stop everyone fixing them to the side of the building and making the building look unsightly, thus devaluing the properties.

Well that was what I got told anyway.

If you have a balcony or garden with your flat you could always try fixing a dish there - however, if you have signed up to Sky it might be a bit risky if you still get complaints and end up having to take it down.

If you were living in Germany, how would you feel if all your neighbours started ganging up on you and trying to stop you installing a sky digital dish?

This dish will make a real difference to this guy's quality of life and his perception of the British (friendly, community minded neighbours or petty vindictive nuisances). You say you are objecting not because you have a problem with the idea, but because you are a "director" and have to do what "is in the residents best interests".

Why not poll all the residents to see if they object. If a majority don't then give the guy your full support. Some of the other residents might want Sky digital, in which case a shared dish with two LNBs could be discretely installed on the roof.
