this has warning bells written all over it.......take care .also check the wu transfer has gone to funds available and not just cleared as they even pass bank checks they are that good...

It's better than that - I've collected it from a local agent in sterling cash and then paid it into my bank account!

I can see why people are suspicious of foreign transactions, but what on earth could he be "trying to pull" here??? I've got his cash, he's got nothing - he doesn't get anything until he arrives here in person.

Can we just pretend for a moment that he's just a fellow human being trying to get on in life?

ahh, thats what he wants you to think.

seriously though, you would have thought that sorting out a place to live would be after any visa was in order. 'trouble' with the visa seems a little odd to me, you eiher have got one and you sort everything out, or you dont have one.

mauritius is not a rich country for most people so having enough funds to buy a return ticket AND have enough money to support himself for his stay in the UK would be very hard to do.
maybe the UK embassy wont issue a visa but it isnt the reason i would be sus.

it would be for a mail drop, pay money to have a 'safe' house for criminal activity. yes anyone could do it, but at the moment the circs given make this a little more likely to be dodgy than if you have met him in person and have copies of his photo ID incase you need to pass on details to the police.

I shared a flat with some people from mauritius at uni, and they were paying international fees (10k a year or something) and paying for accomodation and everything. Some people must be rich! There was a group of about 25 of them in the uni.

I have his £100 deposit sitting in my bank account, nice and safe, and he has no right to refunds of any kind. Therefore there's no potential here for a "deposit scam".

Don't forget to return his deposit if everything turns out legit. I am sure he will have some right to a refund.

Oh dear, you lot... I thought I'd sorted this out on the previous thread! :rotfl:

Imp - yes, of course, once he's moved here, paid all his rent on time and then moved out again, he will get his deposit back. What I meant was that I wouldn't be sending any money overseas to him.

Brummybloke - he had to have evidence of where he will be living, in the form of our houseshare agreement, as part of his visa application. The "problem" with his application was an unexplained sum of money on his 6-month history of bank statements. The money was actually a gift from his mother's savings, so he's submitted her bank statement as evidence for the review.

Part of the condition of the 1-year "holiday" visa is that he has to provide evidence of funds to support himself for the time that he's here in the UK. Basically, he has to have enough savings to pay all his own rent and lifestyle needs for the next 12 months. His rent is therefore more reliable than any other lodger's!

Poppy - fancy putting a tenner on it? I'll be back in touch next month .

sounds like you are giving someone a helping hand to me .... well done you - but yes, do ask for the rent to hold the room for him - standard business practice....

Its possible his visa application has been rejected and hes appealing the decision. Few appeals result in a change of heart by the consulate.

In which case I'll have had £300 of his in return for nothing... I'll feel really sorry for him if that happens :(

Yeah, many of the rejections are because the applicants cant show sufficient funds before arrival too. Maybe you should just ask him to fess up about whats going on with his visa. If he is in appeal tell him that while youll take the months money its unlikely he'll get here so he'll lose it.
