    Hi all,

Really sorry ive not been around the last few weeks, and I wont be around for another 2 - 3 weeks ( perhaps the odd visit )

I ( we) have got a massive fight on our hands to stop our local Bureau from closure. Our lovely council  wants to give the money they provide to us to a profit making company to give advice instead.

Our fight is going well at the mo but its taking every bit of my spare time and will do until the end of the local elections in May.

    See you all soon

    Hi debt doctor,

I hope all goes well for you and your bureau. Having worked for a Local Authority I have nothing but disdain for their pointless, self seeking actions.

There are many hard working conscietious employees in any bureaucracy, but their efforts are dwarfed by the scandalous disregard for tax payers money, that emenates from elected members, and the higher echelons of local government.

It's a bit of a long shot, but have they gone through the correct procedures for offering the contract to tender? Nepotism is a word that could have been created specifically for councils.  If they've cut any corners with the awarding of the contract it could be rescinded.

If it's a private company you can get a directors and members list from Companies House; it would take some research but there may be some interesting family or social links.

    Best regards

    Richard

Good luck DD, I did wonder where you've been. Keep us posted if you have time.

  • This looks like yet another of those cases where the lowest tender wins the contract, & the quality of service is only looked at when people are strong enough to make the short-comings public. :(

Good luck with your fight, debt doctor. There are a lot of people who don't have access to other advisory services, & who depend on a local CAB branch being available to them.

This is our protest march to the guildhall on Thurs 17th April 08 to co incide with the meeting at 2pm to decide our future. The massive public pressure we have put on the council in the last 3 weeks has now put back contracts that were due to be signed on 14th April.:T The 3 hr council debate confirmed that correct proceedures were not followed and that the process was now back to 'square one' and would go to full public consultation on our future........ THE FIGHT GOES ON !!!

That protest looks great DD. Certainly shows the strength of feeling, and that CAB is worth far more to the people who use it than just the money it costs to run.

    Hi debt doctor,

Now why doesn't that surpise me.

If you want to apply even more pressure on them, then it may well be worth a phone call and or meeting with the Audit Commission, stating that you are concerned about the transparency and legitimacy of recent contract awarded by xxxx Local Authority. Of course, make sure the L.A are aware of your intentions in that respect.

    Best of luck,

    Richard

That looks great DD, especially the photo of the councillors, they look like they don't know what hit them.
