SKYPE! Completely free phone calls

Hiya,

Not sure if many people know about skype, but its a way to call people for free via your computers.

If you have broadband at home you can make a free call to anyone else with broadband and a skype username! You don't have to pay a penny, the only thing you have to buy is a headset so you can hear and talk.

This is also great if you have relatives abroad, I speak to my Auntie in Spain all the time with it and the quality is fantastic!

All you do is download the programme at https://www.skype.com

I am going to be starting a MSc in a few weeks and will definitely be using it to keep in tough rather than my mobile!!

  • Students BEWARE! Some Universities do not permit the use of Skype on their networks. Oxford, for one, explicitly bans Skype on the university network.

Why not? Oxford sounds rubbish! They don't even let you home during the first term apparently! They're so far up their own bums!

    Skype is useless!!!!!

Voipbuster = free calls to landlines
Sipgate.com = Free phone number for your pc.

    What more do you need?

See the link mr skint put on for details.

As for you fordy: Don't advertise your cheap skype phones on this board!!!! For a start, who needs a skype phone when a headset will do a fantastic job, and secondly, anyone can get a skype phone off ebay anyway. Wrong board.

Skype channels huge amounts of bandwidth on powerful networks, effectively using them as Skype servers.

And with an Oxford workload and 8 week terms, there really is no time to go home! Most colleges don't ban it, just very few people make the time to go home.
