Anybody make their own wipes?

Does anybody have a good recipe for making own baby wipes...... thought I would have a go at making my own as I have boxes and boxes of paper nappy liners going spare (don't ask) but don't know what combination of water/lotion etc to add

Thanks

  • why not just use a cup of cold camomile tea? It's perfectly fine to clean them up and is very good for keeping the skin healthy too. If you're concerned then add a couple of drops of baby oil to it, but really you don't need to put anything in it. We have days where water is all we use to clean with ... sounds grim to some, but I think all the chemicals in disposable wipes are worse!

What could you use to make washable wipes. I have a old vest that I could cut up. Do I then use the camomile tea lotions to wipe his bum.

What could I use to make disposable wipes with... Kitchen towels? I would prefer to make washable wipes as this is more environmentally better... but would not be looking forward to washing to poo wipes. I suppose I could use my home made disposable wipes for the poos.

I know that this is all simple to you lot but for me I have got so used to using the chemical based shop bought wipes that I can't see past using them. i would like to use a more greener and healther method that would be easy to use.

I thought that using the sensitive pampers with no perfum ment that they was little chemicals in it but having read a book by Friends of The Earth I have been educated otherwise.

Thanks MegaSaver for creating this post.

Not wanting to highjack the thread .. .. has anyone else creates their own chemical less baby toiletries I would be interested in knowing how you make it...

    Thanks

  • I've used the following in a mister bottle to spray right onto baby's bum and to also soak wipes in directly (when I get organised enough to do in advance!)...

1 part baby wash (head to toe type stuff)
    1 part olive oil
    10 parts water
    few drops lavender oil

I've also used cold cammomile tea but it stained my mister bottles :(
  • Thenappylady.co.uk has recipes for wipes along with lots of lovely info.
    Waddle you do eh?
  • I used to use spray bottles but I too found they got stained. Cosmetic really, as they still did the job, but the cold spray in the winter  used to result in a sharp intake of breath from baby :D so I swopped to just pouring the cold tea straight on to the wipes.

For wipes themselves, chop up a fleece scarf/blanket/piece of cheap fleece from the market. The poo comes straight off (apart from that cement type poo they do sometimes ) you'll just need to swish it around in the toilet bowl a little bit. For stubborn poo, I have a couple of old flannels which I chopped up and then stitched around to stop them fraying. They pick EVERYTHING up! I shudder to think how much people buy for professionally made washable wipes. They just use offcuts from the nappy making process and charge a fortune for it!

  • I am so pleased at the number of wonderful ideas given to me so far. I will def be trying the spray bottle with camomile tea and reusable wipes. However, I have just read my original post and realised that I didn't explain myself very well. What I thought of doing is putting my nappy liners in an old wipes box and then covering them with some sort of tea or lotion, so they are ready to use as wipes anytme. I have heard that you could do this with kitchen wipes but just couldn't find a recipe. If I cover them with say camomile tea, how long do you think I could safely leave them in the box?

thanks again to everyone who has replied so far

Don't know if this helps but the mid-wives & HV have advised us to ONLY use cotton wool & water for Spuds bum for at least the first 6 months but they have said there is no reason why we can't stick with this for longer, even when he goes onto solilds. Could you just use the nappy liners soaked in water or wouldn't that work?

Sorry if this isn't helpful, I'm still very new to this parenthood lark:o

huggies are usually on bogofs, i get them and then wash them if not too soiled with poo. use them time and time again, they are quite good quality and can be washed many times. they are really soft after washing, so i use them for runny noses etc, as they are much softer than tissues which often make nose sore!
    Nice to save.
