Student (in credit) Should I trying getting Smile Classic for Cashback?

Hi,

I'm a student and want to earn cash back on a credit card (my first credit card) (also i need a credit card cause places wont except my Maestro) did the smart search on moneysupermarket.com and I got the 'Fair' rating and it recommend Amex Platinum.

Which according to this site is the best cashback card.

Should I apply? What negative effect will it have on me if I fail to get it?

Thanks for the help.

Most cards have a minimum income... Though when I was 18 I applied for a Nationwide classic and I don't bank with them, they didn't ask for proof of income (I only got a £700 limit though).

Good luck, normally you have to have a minimum income and a decent credit history to get a cashback card and you have neither.

The best thing you can do is to go to your bank and apply for their credit card, they are the most likely people to give you one, if you want to start building up your credit history. But PAY IT OFF IN FULL EACH MONTH - don't get into a debt spiral!

Oh and OP, if you have a student account your bank may offer you a special student credit card too. Probably no cashback but will be mastercard or visa so more widely accepted.

    Thanks for all the responses.

Yea i can porbs get one from my bank, but the cashback would have been nice, The Egg Mney card also had a minimum income if I recall.

I guess the main issue is not having a job at all. But they don't seem to state a Min income.

If you are concerned about places not accepting Maestro, then going to Amex certainly isn't going to help.
