To be fair opening other peoples letter for curiousity is more rubbish as you put it than somone getting into financial mess. How can people be so irresposible ? How can you do what you did ? Yes you can justify it but that wa sdisgusting, no doubt now you will come up with all new reasons, but you are not a great person so don't judge other people.
Well, by the sound of it.. My comments offends you in some way.
I won't see myself as irresponsible to start opening their letters after 6 months staying in MY OWN HOUSE. Didn't you read my post bit earlier we opened it coz they gave us the wrong information of service providers on the information release form. !!!.. Well considering those tons of rubbish they left behind, our response couldn't be more polite towards this kind of people, and action..
Now I will have to sort out all the mess they left, having the fear that one day, those debt collectors gonna turn up at my door steps !!!..
NOW WHO IS INDEED IRRESPONSIBLE. !!!0 -
I know some people in the same situation, and their credit rating was heavily affected. You do need to return these letters (address crossed and write RTS (shorter than Return to the sender, but postmen understand)) and, call the creditors and explain that you opened it by mistake and found that it was addressed to a person who is not living there any more. You need to clear this, not to ingore. Otherwise you may be seeing bailiffs every second Saturday at 7am ...All my life my mother told me the storm was coming (c) Terminator 30

They might be irresponsible but at least they arent criminals. Like you.A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person’s detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him.Not even wrong0

What rubbish !! You are opening up mail that is not yours.
Yes you can justify it all you want but it is wrong to open up other peoples mail so what if it is in your house. you should simply put return to sender and that is that. You were being nosey and intrusive and if you aare sat there worrying then it is your own fault in this case.
oh there is nothing you have done that is responsible in this case at all so the whole neeneeer neeeneer neeener but look the other person did this belongs back in preschool.Nice to save.0 -
I'm in the same situation too - I sent things back for 6 months then tore up any further stuff. Checked my credit report and it made no mention of the previos occupants.
I found a letter from my solicitor confirming the date I moved in was handy - I got one after a tennant at my previous address ran up £££££ in my name.0 -
Not everyone is aware that credit is linked to person, not address, and honestly having been in a situation where bailiffs and debt collectors were coming around every fortnight after the previous occupant of a home I lived in recently, it can be scary. Nor do all debt collection agencies pay attention to letters returned marked "gone away", sadly enough. There was absolutely no need for such an impolite post.
To the OP, I would recommend you open the letters (as others point out, it is only illegal if you are planning to do something naughty with them), then contact each sender by phone and follow up with letter to tell them that the person they are writing to no longer resides at your address. If you have a forwarding address or any contact details for the previous occupant, you may like to give this as well.
Should a debt collector or bailiff turn up, even though it is not your debt, do not let them in, as some less scrupulous types may try to have you believe they can take your things in place of the debtor (which they CANNOT, for reference). Your council tax bill is good enough proof that you are the new and only occupant/s, so you can wave that at them if they want to see proof. But no debt collector has any power in this situation, you are not the debtor and they cannot take anything from you, so don't worry!
As an aside, if you're really worried about any financial link with your address (though there should not be one) you can always get a copy of your credit reports (Experian, Equifax, CreditCall) to be on the very safe side - anything odd will show up on one of these.

Just send back the letters "return to sender not at this address"..... Simple they will soon realise the person they are looking for just aint there.
no they will think you are the person trying to default further and send the boys round eventually!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0 -

The trouble is that most of these credit chasing letters don't include the return address on the back of the envelope, for obvious reasons. This slows up the Post Office returning to sender procedure. In the meantime, the OP gets more letters, more phone calls, bailiffs turning up. Meanwhile, whoever actually owes this money is charged for all these unreceived letters. What is the problem with opening one and phoning the sender to say 'They don't live here now and I do/do not have their forwarding address'?Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
