Lloyds TSB GGrrrrrrrrr!!!

in Credit cards
Im not very happy. I recently wrote a cheque out to pay off my credit card, from my lloyds classic account to my lloyds advance credit card account. Unfortunately my wages were paid in later than I'd planned so the cheque bounced. So I paid it again a couple of days later and it cleared. But in the meantime they had automatically taken it from my account again, this has happened twice! This showed my credit card account to be in credit by £2600, and my classic account to be £2000 overdrawn! So I called them yesterday to explain what had happened, and after a very lengthy conversation was told that they cannot re credit my classic account untill the cheque has cleard, but I said its not going to clear because Im now 2 grand overdrwan! Anyway, I gave up with them and went straight to my branch and asked them to try and sort it for me. They rang the creditcard number (the same as I did) and was told that it would be paid back into my classic account straight away... Why didn't they do that for me in the first place?
Anyway, what worries me is that while my account was overdrwan what happens with the D/D's that are due to go out? Im going to get charged if any payments are returned to me. Surely Lloyds TSB advance shouold pay these charges as they have accepted that they were in the wrong.

i think you will have to ask them about it.
in my experience with lloyds they do pay the DD's and standing orders, and i think they are supposed to charge you.
i got away with going over by about £50 the other month as they have not charged me.
i think i just slipped the net.'What's poignancy grandad?'

I didn't mean I expect them to pay for my DD's, I meant if im charged for any DD's that couoldn't be paid because my account is overdrawn then I don't think it should be down to me to pay these charges as its through no fault of my own that my account is overdrawn. I have an overdraft of £370, this error has taken me way beyond that limit!0

I am too an existing customer with Lloyds, and I think their customer services are appalling: i lost my debit card once, got it replaced, but never received the pin, it turned out to be the basic sh!tty card instead of the visa electron, they kept on sending me back and forth between the branch and the helpline number. it took me 2 weeks before I could resume my normal life again.
Then I wanted my chequebooks to be kept at the branch for collection only, they kept on sending them to my mom's address (with the wrong spelling) in France. 3 times, i ended up having my mom send one of them back to me (quite risky considereing the quality of the royal mail in their previous handlings of french mail) but i had to pay my rent to different people: they charged me for the ffing bankers' draft while my lack of cheques was caused by them. They apologised and waived it.
Sometimes, the clerk would take ages like 45 minutes to complete very simple transactions. my branches at portsmouth were useless and the staff was irrespectful of me and my frenchness (I had a bit of difficulty when I arrived 6 years ago). they did not make any effort to make themselves understood.
I filed a thorough complaint at my branch with one of their supervisors, nothing came from it.
The only reason I am staying with them is because of their premier current account. the rest of my money is going to different other ISA and savings accounts."Don't cry, Don't Raise your Eye

Am I missing something here? You say that the first cheque you wrote bounced, and that the second cheque you wrote did not. Then you say that the took 2 lots of money out of your account. So surely the first cheque did not bounce? Or is it just me?0 -

i was saying that DD's will be paid if you are over your overdraft, in refence to your worries about what happens to the DD's that are due to go out. i assumed it was obvious that it would be from your account and not by them.
hopefully you will not be charged, but to be honest you shouldn't write cheques when you cannot guarantee your account can cover them. i know it was not your fault you were paid late but this does happen, especially over bank holidays.
i agree that the credit card part should have been sorted over the phone when you called them, you should not have to go into the bank to get them to do the same thing you have already done.'What's poignancy grandad?'

When a cheque bounces, Lloyds automatically represent it. Therefore what appears to have happened here is that the OP has not waited for the first cheque to be represented to the bank before issuing a replacement. This means that both cheques have then been processed and presumably there were sufficient funds in the account at the time of both presentations for them to clear.0 -
I don't know why you suggest that it was Lloyds' fault that you went overdrawn.
YOU presented a bouncing cheque. They presented it - and it bounced. So they represented it - which is normal practice precisely because people often have the money there, but a day or two late. So the first cheque cleared.
YOU assumed they wouldn't represent it, so sent them another cheque. Your mistake.
YOU were overdrawn due to your two mistakes, not due to their mistake. I don't see why they should refund any rejected DD charges.0 -
So in what way were the bank to blame here?
It was not their fault that the OP's wages were late.
It was not their fault that OP wrote 2 seperate cheques.
They can only base their decision as to whether to pay or bounce a cheque on the day it is presented for payment - if no money is in the account they chose to bounce it.
If the OP had decided to use Internet or Phone banking the transaction would have been declined in the first place avoiding all this hassle.

Agree with all posts saying the banks are not wrong.. but feel sorry for OP who got caught up in a system they did not understand... Do we all fully understand how banks work... Or does that come from experience??
At ours or others expence?? Hope peeps have learnt something about how banks operate here. 0 -
There's NO point paying things like this by cheque. Pay by BACS transfer and the problem wouldn't arise, as the last couple of posts say.
It's a breach of banking terms & conditions to write a cheque without having the funds in the account - so the first cheque was inappropriate and (arguably) fraudulent although obviously without any intent to defraud.0
