Placed my order at 8:30 this morning, and received a confirmation email pretty much straight away.

Have checked my online statement, and while there's nothing on there from Virgin, my limit, less available balance (and other items on the statement) indicate that they've taken the lower amount (£36.02 as opposed to 55.97 in my case).

Not had any other emails to the contrary yet, so fingers crossed...

can they charge a different price to that on the receipt?

    ???

Well, Index seem to. First transaction for the full amount followed by a refund for the discount.
  • no they cant chjarge you a different amount, they have to contact you first before procedding...otherwise you can demand a refund and they have to collect the goods at THEIR cost

    From Virgin's T&C's
    FORMATION OF THE CONTRACT

No contract will subsist between you and Virgin Retail Limited for the sale by it to you of any product unless and until you have received confirmation of your order in the form of a receipt confirming details of your order. Once the receipt has been received, there will be a legally binding contract between us.

So does that mean that any e-mails stating the discounted prices will be honoured?
    IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND

You may cancel your order for goods for any reason at any time up to the end of the seventh working day after you place your order even if you have already received the goods. If you do, the following terms will apply:

    • The only circumstance in which you may not cancel your order is if you have taken any product out of the sealed package in which it was delivered to you.
    • To cancel your order you must notify Virgin Retail Limited in writing at customerservices@virginmega.co.uk or by post to Virgin Megastores Customer Services, PO Box 2889, London, W1A 5RL.
    • If you cancel your order but Virgin Retail Limited has already dispatched the product to you then you must call the Customer Helpline on 020 7299 0444 to arrange a return, which will be at your cost and risk. Sealed items should not be unpacked.

So it could be quite expensive to send it back especially since anything over £28 will not be covered by Royal Mail unless you take out special delivery which could be quite expensive for heavy items such as large boxsets. :(
  • So does that mean that any e-mails stating the discounted prices will be honoured?

Not in my case it doesnt seem to be, i got the reciept for the reduced amount but have been charged the full amount.

If you do have to send anything back it shouldn't cost you anything. This is at the bottom of the email sent by Virgin:

"Under the United Kingdom's Distance Selling Regulations you have the right to cancel the contract for the purchase of any of these items within 7 working days of delivery. This applies to all of our products. However, we regret that we cannot accept cancellations of contracts for the purchase of video, DVD, audio, video games and software products where the item has been unsealed.

To cancel this contract, please fill out the back of the delivery note that accompanies your item(s), giving the reason for the return as "Unwanted item". Please package the relevant item securely, ideally reusing the
original box the order came in, and send it to us with the delivery note so that we receive it within 7 working days of the date that the item was delivered to you. Please use the freepost address label on the delivery note included in the box."

    Just don't unseal them first!
