slugs in my kitchen,,,yuck

over the last few weeks, fairly frequently, if ive gone into my kitchen in the early hours, ive found 2 or 3 slugs on the kitchen floor,i cant work out how they get in, each time ive chucked them out in the garden, now im starting to think is it the same 2 or 3 slugs...do they have some sort of homing instinct, this time ive chucked them over the fence, so be interesting to see if they show up again,,or willit just be different slugs,,,,whats the attraction with my kitchen,,,how do they get in,,,how should i stop them,,,any slug experts out there,,,,,

Have you got any pets? Just that my dog brings them in because they attach to her fur, then drop off when she gets in. As you say yuk!

If you have a cat they could bring them in as a present. A relative on mine's cat used to bring in frogs, still alive, trouble was the daughter had a phobia of frogs, you should have heard the screaming.

    Just a thought!!

I get slugs in my house as well, and they also seem to sneak out in the night because I usually only see their trails (even on the carpets! I thought it was because it's an old, damp house with wooden floors, but i've recently seen a trail at the back of my fireplace in a room where there is a concrete floor (the slugs would get a shock if I lit the gas!). I hadn't thought about blaming my spaniel, who has big, fluffy slug-gathering paws.

We had a major slug problem for over a year.
In the early hours we would find up to 15 of the big fat green ones all over the kitchen. When we started finding slug trails in the dishwasher and cutlery drawer I said enough is enough.
We got my dad round, who is a plumber come general handyman and eventually he found that our dishwasher had been leaking and our wooden floorboards were soaked.
He went under the floor and found a colony of them, living on the walls.
We had to smash up our ceramic floor tiles and let the floor dry out.We also put loads of slug pellets everywhere, under the floor, back of units, in all the cracks around the door etc.
We are now slug free! and have laminate in the kitchen and a new dishwasher.
I'm not saying your problem is as bad as ours, but damp is usually a main factor.Have a good check around for leaking appliances etc.
Oh and a very good tip. When you walk barefoot in the kitchen at night, turn the light on first.I speak from experience!

A friend of mine has this problem. It's a very old house and the problem is due to a badly fitting external kitchen door - as we found out when we found one of the fatter little blighters stuck half in/half out

  • we had them in our house, one night they had been all over the sofa and left trails all over the living room.

they were getting in through a couple of ventilation bricks at the back of the house.

slug pellets were out down and now we have bodies every morning, but i don't have to wash those sofa covers again!!!

  • Hi,

Unfortunately the little fat Bu****s can get almost anywhere. I have seen them get through a gap of less than 3mm.

I believe they are like mice and can compress themselves to get through the tiniest of gaps.

I would get some slug pellets and put them outside of your house.

Apparently they love beer and if you half fill a empty margarine tub with beer they will crawl into to drink the beer and drown, then throw it in the bin the next day!
  • I can vouch for the beer, as slugs have been eating my garden plants. I put down two beer traps and empty 10-20 slugs of various sizes each 2-3 days. My plants are looking much better now.

I remember watching a gardening programme with Sir Titchmarsh a few years ago and he reckoned they had a homing instinct! Yuk. I don't mind spiders but slugs - blearghhhh. Hope you manage to get rid.

You also need to be careful walking around in bare feet. Slugs squashed in between your toes are not pleasant.

<thinks back to big green slug in utility room last week...haven't seen it since!>
