dog friendly kitchen floor?

replacing the kitchen and need to do the floor, currently have tiles but hate the fact that the grout has worn away making it harder to clean.
I have 4 dogs, spaniels, so I need something hard wearing but easy to clean and not too pricey???
Looking at tile effect laminate, slate tiles, or a good padded vinyl??
any pro's and con's that folks have found?
Dont like laminate wood effect as its too slippy for the dogs.

Why not just re-grout? Simple and cheap alternative.

I am about to move and get a new kitchen - I have 3 dogs and was also wondering what flooring to get. I envisaged tiles of some discription - slate or terracotta (haven't look into the cost yet) have been wondering about the grouting - what happens if a dogs has an accident does it seep into the grout and get smelly or will it mop up with no problems?

  • I am currently ripping out my tiled kitchen floor, I have 2 dogs & yes the smell does seep into the grout/tile adhesive!!

Not sure what flooring I will be putting down as a replacement,(was thinking of a hard wearing lino) but will follow this thread for any ideas.

Be careful since you have dogs. We put laminate flooring in the hall and have now had to put down a rug as our labrador couldn't keep her feet on the laminate. She has had several nasty slips and ended up refusing to walk across it unless someone held her collar. She manages OK on the kitchen vinyl floor.
  • Karndean is fantastic! I have 3 cats and 2 dogs it is bomb proof, heat proof, stainless and does not take in odours. I would definately recommend it and it doesnt feel as cold to the touch or your feet as tiles.

I never get the feeling that a tiles floor is clean, the grout just seems to be a dirt and bug trap with dogs, maybe thats just me.
    Is Karndean expensive??

  • When we first got our spaniel he loved our kitchen lino, obviously it tasted like beef or something coz he almost ate the whole floor! It's soft and really easy for them to rip up! I would never have this again.

Padded vinyl will get little dents in it from their claws surely? - just remembering the damage my stillettos used to make in my mums (a very long time ago)!

karndean may be more expensive but would be well worth it.
