Like any city it has it's '!!!!!! tips' and nice areas.

Providing you avoid anywhere within 2 miles of Wallsend or the West end, you should me mostly ok. Maybe add Killingworth too that list :P

However the most important factor is location relative to job. Remember that the whole area is split by a river with limited crossing. Factor this into your potential areas.

Ponteland for sure is a good area ,avoid i would say Cowgate, West End,
Wallsend, 2nd choice would be of course my own manor and that would be
    Gosforth.
  • Depending upon where you work should make you consider living that side of the river.
I commuted every day and the river crossings are rubbish and always busy. I always found traffic for people living north was slightly easier.
I just moved to a village outside Durham and I can see the Angel, St James and the whole of newcastle just at least 10 miles away. Life is better now.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:
  • It really does depend on your budget and the type of property you want.

Gosforth, Ponteland and Jesmond are lovely but very expensive. Although, some parts of Jesmond are very studenty. I have nothing against students, I moved here to go to University but it means I know how noisy we can be. Heaton is cheaper but still nice although again lots of students.

A bit further out property on the coast can be lovely, Morpeth (a small market town to the north) is beautiful, as are some of the villages to the west of Newcastle.

Other people have mentioned Gateshead which is where I chose. It is improving and lots of ftbs priced out of Newcastle have moved there. I'm ten minutes to Newcastle city centre on the metro and frankly never go in to Gateshead town centre so with or without the Trinity Square development it doesn't make much difference to me. One of the nicest areas of Gateshead for ftbs are Tyneside flats on the avenues near Saltwell Park (apparently voted the best park in Britain).

All the places to stay away from have been mentioned although to be honest I've lived in the Elswick/Fenham area in the past and work in Byker/Walker and not had any problems so far
