DON'T GO WITH ABACUS!!! Had all my stuff nicked out of the Mess 4 weeks ago and they are still fobbing me off over the settlement figure - everytime i phone (they haven't phoned me once) i speak to someone different as the last person i spoke to isn't available, and they all keep telling me different things

mmmm - OH and I are with abacus and found them nothing but helpful and professional. when his car was broken into and some kit taken, it was sorted out very quickly. most of his collegues in his bay are with them too and never had any problems.
i think people should, as with all insurances, research them individually and choose one that suits their own needs.

We are also with SLI and found them the best and easiest firm to use in terms of form filling etc, they don't ask hundreds of questions because the scheme is specifically set up for the forces.
  • Found a site that deals with life insurance for armed forces personnel, www.insurance-4-life.co.uk, they deal directly with Lifesearch who are one of the biggest brokers for life insurance. Also this site has a link to a compensation site which deals with injured personnel. http://www.personal-injury-experts.co.uk/injuries-suffered-by-armed-forces-personnel.html
Apologies if this is not the correct place to mention it but thought it may be of benefit to our guys and gals and it is sort of connected!!

We used Trinity Insurance Services during our service career. We found them excellent and they were able to discuss several options. They only only work with HM Forces personnel and their families

    Hiya,

PAX DO cover you for death by accident (eg car crash) and acts of war (except if we go to war with the 4 main powers she said!). It is covered under section one, which is the personal accident section.

If you choose to take out the additional life cover, that covers you by death from illnesses (natural causes) and gives you a death benefit payable upon diagnosis of a termianl illness.

You get £1000 per unit for either, but it is only payable once (for obvious reasons!).

Hope that helps anyone who is looking at PAX, it is not clear from their website, but if you ring them, they will explain that the T&C state the exclusions, and they will tell you exactly what is covered - and death in a warzone IS one of those things.

  • Hi,
Thought it may be worth mentioning that you are entitled to claim back anyextra premiums due to your work in the Military. To be exact 90% of any loading. It is a pain in the !!! but worth it if you are in Bomb disposal etc. You need form F010 or something like this from the UPO and you can claim upto 5 years in arrears.

I am with Sterling Life also.

    https://www.servicelifeinsurance.co.uk/DesktopModules/Desktop/DesktopDefault.aspx?WebPageId=8

I pay £22/month for 200k of cover for a smoking 34 yr old. I could get it for cheaper somewhere else but not covered by acts of war :(

Very easy to get cover and not much info required.

Be careful about PAX. It is insurance against injury rather than death. They do offer life insurance but it is for natural causes only (ie heart attack, stroke etc) not being killed in Basrah or Afghanistan.

I am with SLI (Sterling Life Insurance) who were formed in conjunction with the MoD to provide specialist life cover. If my memory is right I pay £16/mth for either £200k or £250k with no restrictions on war cover, you can even take it out the day before you are due to deploy, but if you cancel you have to wait a couple of years before you join again.

You are correct, I was just going to place a post on this when I found your post,,,READ THE SMALL PRINT ON PAX, I think you will find that it does not cover you for War Risk,,,,,which I found rather disheartening as PAX I thought, and was under the impression, that it was designed for HM Forces people.....??

    An update.

    AEGON Scottish Equitable

Myself and the wife, insured for £100,000.
    • Payout on death of first person (so if one is killed £100k to the other, if both killed £100k paid to children on the first one prounced dead)
    • Terminal Illness
My job within the Armed Forces declared. Not covered for acts of war, but death in service will cover that. Have 2 children, under 6yrs old. Went for a 20yr term, though 13 years left in forces till 22yrs service.

£9.25 per month for both of us.

Cheap as chips for the 2 hours a day i spend commuting to work etc, plus if i was killed in a RTA, whilst on duty the wife would maybe receive death in service (3x Wages.?) , and life insurance payout.
