Direct Line - Renewal but still get a new quote
Comments

just been online and a new quotation offers me insurance at £57 more than what my renewal is, Telephoned them back and queried the 0% finance and it was only offered to new customers and not renewals. dont seem to be able to get out of this one !! if I could get insurance cheaper else where believe me I would, but after trying all avenues I guess I will stick with direct line for anther 12 months.0

This is a common practice amongst insurers, and indeed with most companies that offer some kind of membership.
The idea is that, where a quote is offered on a "new customer" basis, it will be artificially lowered to attract a customer to take up the offer. On renewal, though, the price is not as attractive as it would be for a new customer quote. The theory is that most people cant be bothered to shop around or change their provider, so will stay with the existing company and continue to pay their exhorbitant charges.
So anytime taht a renewal does come up, always shop around and never accept a renewal without first checking out how much it would be for a new contract.

Direct Line, Churchill, Privilege and Tesco insurances are all owned by the same company (Royal Bank of Scotland) - they do have different market niches and so offers will vary depending on your circumstances.
With regards to the interest rate, I think you will find that the 0% offer applies only to new business and not renewals (I know cos I work for the buggers listed above!). Unfortunately, you have no cause for complaint as this is again standard market practice and is made quite clear in their full terms and conditions (which the policy book is not - it is merely an outline of the main points of the contract).
I'd recommend writing to the company for information rather than phoning through - most of the time you will get a brain-dead call centre advisor with an attitude who's trying to hit targets and get you off the phone as quick as poss because their tea break is up.0 -
Our home insurance renewal with Direct Line was more expensive than last year and we hadn't made a claim, did an online quote and it was £140 cheaper!!! Rang and they said the renewal goes through one system the online quotes another, they wouldn't change the renewal just told us to take the online quote.
Can't believe the difference was £140 (about 35% cheaper)! Couldn't better it anywhere else either.0 -
I started this thread and saved myself a few 'bob. In it I commeneted that my house insurance quote was coming through next month (bad timming one after the other)
Anyway Renewal House Insurance through post £700.00
Online quote £459.00
Saving off £241.00
I called Direct Line as I thought £700 was a misprint, in fact this was a rise of 60% from the previous year. The assistance was not very helpful but confirmed it was an accurate quote. Needless to say I was very glad I had already got an online quote which was a small rise of £15 from the previous year !!0
