New boiler ££££ Hope this makes a difference

We have a 30-year old Trianco boiler (75kw) That I've been advised could be as bad as 50% efficient.

£1000 pcm winter use in oil would back up that theory.

So, I've been looking into KIDD, who are local to me, and by all accounts make pretty efficient boilers at 90+%.

But they are expensive at about £4,500 plus all the additional alloy chimney tubes etc.

Does anyone know much about them? My dilemma is obviously how long would I expect this boiler to have become a worthwhile investment. We have no plans to move, but these days you never know, and its got to be a beneficial move!

  • Well assuming your current boiler is only 50% efficient that means for every £1000 you feed it with oil, you only get £500 out in useful heat energy to use in your house.

On the other hand if it was 90% efficient for £1000 in you would get £900 out

    Difference £400

Another way to look at it is is for £1000 of oil you are getting £500 of heat (at 50% efficiency), to get that same £500 of heat with a 90% efficient boiler would only use £555 of oil.

So (over the winter months) you would be saving £445 per month running a 90% vs a 50% efficient boiler. obviously be less in summer!

After all that (probably clear as mud lol) I'd reckon on a 2 - 3 year payback time on £4 - 5K outlay (Rememeber, that is assuiming you current boiler is only 50% efficient AND the new one is 90% efficient!)

Absolutely, thank you. I left my maths back in the classroom on my way out I'm afraid.

But is it actually only 50% efficient? Why dont you get your oil engineer when its next serviced to test it - using flue analyser.
We also have an over 20yr old floor standing Trianco boiler which perfoms at around 75% efficiency and during the summer months when only hot water is required hardly uses much oil at all.
Perhaps the rest of your system is not efficiently set up ie room thermostat, insulation, TRV's etc.
  • I would (personally) be quite surprised if a 30 year old boiler (even a well maintained one) managed over 50-60% efficiency (unless it was best of breed efficiency-wise when new then perhaps 60-70%)

Even taking the better figures and moving form 70% to a new 90% efficiency boiler there is still a hefty saving and payback will be well within the useful life of the boiler.
