Seem to remember I did the hair with a garlic press....I don't have one any more, but don't have any 6yo girls either! I think I did Barbie cake for 7th birthday. will try and scan."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

purpleivy - those cakes are fab.
My mum always made beautiful cakes for our birthdays and inspired my younger sister so much she has just completed a cake decorating course. In fact I was in the local oxfam book shop this morning and bought her a beautiful book for more inspiration - and a treat. Her Fiance is in teh merchant navy and just been sent to sea for 4 months
She has so much patience - I love baking but can never wait long enough to ice anything - although that might have a lot to do with DH as well!
I love the mermaid cake.
back on topic, when mum couldn't find a suitable mould she would bake a huge rectangular cake and cut a main shape out of it, then bake a few other cakes and use them to add where they were needed. The ones I can remember were:
a rainbow with gold at the end
a horse's head (pony club style - not godfather style!)
clown's head
teddy bear
number 7
a kite
a quarry (long story, my dad has a drilling and blasting company!)
football pitch
would love to see a picture of what you come up withr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
Why didn't I get any creative genes? Sulks lol
Just had a thought. Mum in law has one of those square cake tins that can be adjusted to loads of sizes. Will ask to borrow that. See if I can find any creativity inside me.0 -
Great cakes Purpleivy.
I have used the adjustable cake tins and they are very handy.
If you do decide to go with bottom less cake tins (numbers or whatever), what I usually do is line them just the same as I do any other:
Cut out a piece/pieces long enough to line all around the sides (I now have a roll about 4" deep for this from Lakeland), then cut slits about 1 -2 inches deep all along (to create flaps) so you can fold it and it will follow the shape of the tin. Grease sides of tin so the greaseproof paper sticks.
Then cut the shape of the tin out for the base and put this over the flaps of the paper used to line the sides and believe it or not this keeps the cake batter in the tin (put it on a baking tray).
You will need to use this method with any baking tin. If you use the adjustable one, this will also work with that.
Sorry reading back it seems very complicated but it's not - just fiddly for number tins.0 -
most of the cakes i use i start with a huge rectangle then cut to the shape i want.. we have had dinosaurs, castles, tractors, army barracks, tank fights (can u tel i have a boy lol)
did a race track when he was 8, with bridge over the lap bit, that was made with 2 circular tins...the 10 was an airport on the 1 and planes on the 0 bit.. for his recent 11th birthday we did a santa pod racetrack, the 2 lanes being the two 1's .. again made in a rectangular swiss roll tin and cut in half to make the right size
its amazing how u can jus add bits and pieces of sponge to make the shape and then jus cover the whole lot with icing and no one knows.. i always use butter icing as its more manageable and forgiving
my son wont eat shop bought birthday cakes (who can blame him) so i do somthing every year.. no idea how to copy them into a post so cant show u sorry
happy bakingWhen you know better you do better0
