I want to make a "10" cake for my sons birthday next week. I'm going to hire the numbers 1 & 0 from a local cake making shop.
I'm a comptent baker, but have never used a tin without a base before.
I don't want to look a total plonker asking loads of questions when I got to pick up the tins.
What I need to know is:
How do I work out how much cake mixture to make?
The best kind of cake, Victoria sponge or something different?
The biggie is HOW do you line the tin to stop all of the mixture flowing back out of the bottom?
Hope someone can help.

when i made these i use to sellotape the baking paper to the tins!
I'm sure there is an easier way but thats what i did, a little did escape but not too much.
You have to cut out rough shape then put lots of slits in paper as going round tin and taping
I'de be interested in an easier way too!
I use to just judge the amount of mix, thinking how much more than a standard 4 egg mix each would hold.If you do have any over make some fairy cakes maybeThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
not a suggestion for lining but for saving u money on hiring the tins
when myu son was ten i did a rectangle cake and cut it in half to make 2 layers for the 1 and used 2 normal round cake tisn for the 0 and cut the middle bit out
thought it might save u some money and be easier to useWhen you know better you do better0 -

Take the tin you usually make a cake in. Fill it with water to the height of the cake you usually make. Measure the volume of water using a measuring jug.
Take the number tin and fill it with water to the same height as you just did in your own tin. Measure the volume of water there.
Divide second volume by the first and then multiply the result by the recipe quantities for your own cake recipe.
Does that make sense?
I'd make Victoria sponge (chocolate flavour if your children are anything like mine)

Or use a round tin and put a smaller round tin (cake tin, bean can, whatever) in the middle so it doesn't fill with mix. It will cook much quicker as well.
Your child/ren will be soooooo impressed you have done this for them! I have a pic somewhere of a 6 that I did for dd's birthday, will see if I can find it and scan in."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I can't remember how I did this I'm afraid, but you can see how I made the circle cake.
Don't be too afraid of talking to the person in the cake shop, they will be well placed to help and might even have a sheet for you so that you can work out what you need. I have an old M&S book with different sizes of cake in, send me a pm if you are interested and I'll see if I can scan the details in.
After a particularly stressful day (dh was away at Le Mans, I had 10 girls for tea, had houseguests from Sweden just arrived) my dd had the nerve to say she didn't like the cake! I have, of course, never let her forget this LOL. WHat she meant was, that she didn't like all that sugar paste. Who can blame her!
Technical question... why isn't the photo coming up here any more, just the link? I thought I had mastered it, it happened first time I did it and then vanished when I edited"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Sorry for not getting back here sooner, just had a mad, crazy morning at work with too many managers around to be seen surfing the net lol. Now they've all gone to lunch....
Purpleivy that Mermaid cake is AMAZING! Loving the can in the middle idea. Will give it a go.
Shykins, I think I'll try your rectangle idea for the "1" and Purpleivy's "0" idea, as I'm rubbish at cutting things out, I just know I'll make a mess of it.
Penelope Penguin,I DO understand your method, in fact I'm going to write it down and stick in my recipe file! Was thinking about a chocolate cake for him anyway
Thank you all, you are all stars. I have no idea what I would do without this forum!0 -
It looks complicated, but not really. If you have a heap of icing and some paste colours it isn't difficult. TIme consuming, but not difficult."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I made a number 1 for my dd and I hired a tin with no bottom too. I greased the tin then used foil to completely cover the bottom of the tin and used extra pieces to reinforce the corners, then greased the bottom of the foil too. Hope your ds has a great birthday.
HTH
Purpleivy - your cake looks great - might have a go at a mermaid for my dd's birthday - she'll be 6 in November.
ETA: Purpleivy - my dd just saw your cake and really wants it for her birthday! - although she was put off by all the vegetables surrounding it - lol - until I told her they were shells and now she wants it again!!!!!!0
