So angry - specsavers

I am so cross. Ok, so lots of you are going to say i was a push over - but i really wasnt in the right frame of mind.

Just had a sight test, its got so bad so quickly (5 months) that he is worried i might be diabetic - completely freaked me out!! I suffer from panic attacks, and i really did panic!!!!!

I went downstairs and was told to talk to this guy about new lenses. I just wanted the lenses put in my normal frames but the guy told me they dont suit me at all so i should get new ones! he started bombarding me with frames and telling me about all these different lenses and lense coating.
I asked him to leave me to choose some by myself, but he didnt budge! Just hovered around me.

I was like a zombie, worrying about what the optician had said and worrying that i have no money and need to get new lenses.

He was just so pushy, just a bully really!!

I ended up paying nearly £300   I am so far into my over draft, i really didnt need this!!

Not happy with how he was, feel like i was forced into paying for something i didnt want.

Also - i paid, and he said it had 'void' ?? It did say that on a receipt he gave me, so i had to pay again??

Why don't you go back and tell them you were bullied into it. And I've never paid more than a deposit for spectacles until I'm satisfied with them.
You really have to learn to say 'No' and/or walk away! But you really know that in your heart-of-hearts, don't you.

May be more for next time, but you're not obliged to buy specs from anyone. The optician who does the eye test has to give you your prescription which you can use to buy from anywhere. You can either try online, go to another shop, or come back later (no real time limit) with other half or friend.

The 'void' on the credit/debit card receipt means something went wrong with the original transaction (somebody probably hit the wrong button or it timed out) - keep both receipts and check bank (debit card) or CC statement asap.

Go back to the opticians and say you were bullied into buying specs because of a diabetes scare from the optician and you weren't thinking straight.

If they won't refund phone trading standards and ask for their advice.

Or go to the citizens advice bureau and they will help you.

Above all go to the doctors and get tested for diabetes.

Good luck and don't give in to bullies.

I think i will ring them up and ask it to be cancelled. I do need new specs, but not for that kind of price!!

I would never bully any one into anything, it just made me feel so uncomfortable!

Having a diabetes test done at the docs tonight, scared rigid!

I think i might make a complaint about the guy too.

Go back QUICKLY to sort this out .. otherwise if they get a chance to manufacture the lenses it will be more difficult. Why do you need to spend so much ... my glasses have just about every add-on except for a pair of wipers and I only paid about £140 for them - and got a second pair free.

If it is on a credit card you could cancel it!

Yes, I agree with previous posts. Go back and cancel and make it clear you were frightened and bullied into buying them.

    Re: £140 glasses
Ivan - Did your glasses have varifocal lenses? I am needing some new ones and looking to get good deal but also good quality as a friend got some new varifocals which were so badly made they gave her awful headaches (she was able to get them exchanged but don't want to go through that hassle!)

I read this and had to reply (even though I won't be saying anything different from anyone else here!) because exactly the same thing happened to me at D and A last year. I had an eyetest and then got all anxious and they weren't very clear about the cost of the lenses and the frames until they added it all together and presented me with a bill - I paid it and then felt that I couldn't afford it - so I kept phoning up and asking them to cancel.
They said that they couldn't stop the order and gave me a lot of hassle and in the end, the manager of the store admitted that he had made a mistake and that I had been hardsold the glasses and I got the money back - in cash - it took about two months though.
And the cost of my glasses was about the same (£300) - I have very bad eyesight and the cost of lenses increases dramatically when you need a high prescription - as does your choice of 'cheap' options.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that it all worked out in the end for me and I was in the same situation.

purple12 - ah i am so glad i'm not the only one! They werent at all clear about it.

But now i'm worried because i need the glasses very quickly because apparently i'm bordering on not legally being able to drive because of how bad my eyes had got!!

I think i will go ahead with the glasses, but will make a complaint about how i was bullied into it. Hmm but then i wont be able to go back there!!

If you go back ASAP (or phone) you might be able to cancel the lens order and get a refund on the frame. and just get lens for your current glasses frame.

If they made your lens there and then then you will have to ask to see the manager and explain and hope they will give you a full refund. However in law there is nothing you can do about this pressure selling, and trading standards won't be able to offer any real help.

Credit card transactions AFAIK are legally binding and cannot be cancelled. If you can cancel them (I doubt you can) you will still be liable to the merchant for the full amount.

If you just take the prescription, you can have new frame AND lenses for about 25 quid from

I know someone who used specs direct and were happy.
