law on having horses in back garden in city

Can somebody please direct me to some sort of law or guideline that will tell me if it is allowed to build a stable and have horses (the small type) in the back garden of a house in a normal estate in a city (not city center)? The garden is 10x10meters, max.

    No idea why don't you give you local council a call and ask. Lots of houses have things written in to Deeds so you can't do certain things.

    got this from google "keeping horses in back garden"

    In most circumstances planning permission is required for the keeping of horses and building stables and other structures connected with their use.
    The only exceptions are:
    • keeping horses for use in agriculture (working horses);
    • grazing;
    • in some cases, keeping horses at a private house.

    I have called the council, waiting for them to call me back..

    Its not for me, btw, its our neighbour who has decided they might get horses, something I am not very keen on for obvious reasons.. I just want to get confirmation you cant do such a thing in the middle of a housing estate, just to rest my mind.

    I like animals, but I would not want to live next to a house with horses in the garden.

    I thought this was a joke thread! How cruel to the horses! Even if they are small - it's completely the wrong place to have horses - where will they exercise?

    Believe me, that was the first thing I said when I was told..:) Apperently they will be exercised morning and evenings by going out for a ride (in the estate I presume).

    I am assuming there is a law against this, hoping the council will confirm this when they call me back.

    I wouldnt have minded so much if he had a massive garden, but its something like 10m x 10m, and that includes the raised patio area they've got. Madness.

    That is so unfair on the horses - they need more than a bit of exercise twice a day, they need turning out on sufficient grazing, and company, at least!

    Why can't they find a livery yard nearby instead? I know it'd cost more but it would be far better for the horses.

    Please do update us on what your Council says when they call you back as I'm curious about this! I adore horses and would love to get one if money would allow (namely trying to find the money to afford to keep one at a Livery yard!!) but I'm not sure what the law is regarding keeping them in a garden. I dare say it'll all come down to getting planning permission for a stable to be built.

    When you say they're planning on getting the small horses, I sincerely hope they've got tiny kids as Shetlands aren't exactly suitable for adults or teenagers to ride! (Albeit not impossible, just not ideal!) And miniature horses as they're called can't be ridden at all as most are smaller than a medium sized dog....

    I'm baffled as to why they'd even try to keep one (or more!) in a garden of that size.

    RSPCA would give guidance on this. I guess we can all imagine what it will be !

    AFAIK, you can keep horses where you like unless there are council bylaws to prevent it but under the Animals Act animals must be allowed to exchibit(sp!) natural behaviour which I can't imagine a 10 x 10 garden will allow......

    Obviously planning permission is required if they put up any stables but if they already have a shed or garage that may be suitable there isn't any pp required.

    IMO, the best way to put them off is to point out the quantity of poo that would have to be properly ( and expensively) disposed of due to new regs, sorry don't know the details, google muck heap disposal. Also ponies kept in such a small space will be very fresh when they're ridden :eek: on the road!!! and public liability insurance is essiential in case they escape either by dumping kids or into someones garden....that'll cost. TBH, most kids like the idea of riding but what the really like is the time spent with other kids haring around and playing silly b****rs and most ponies get VERY naughty when they're kept by inexperienced people. Once they get bored or dumped a couple of times at least 70% of kids give up, in my experience and then your neighbours are stuck with expensive redundant pets, at least on a yard there will be help, company and friends for the kids and if worst happens there is a chance of selling them on, nobody with any sense will buy a kids pony out of a back garden....they know what they'll probably be like:rolleyes:

    I think I remember seeing somthing like this on a TV programme a while ago (animal rescue?). Although there are no laws against it the RSPCA do not take kindly to it.

    On the programme he had a shetland pony in a garden in a mini stable. And although he took them out each day for a 'ride' they were made to re home them. Maybe ask the RSPCA on their opinion?
