I think you have actually had a very lucky escape. have you not read the numerous threads about Comet on here?
  • So they should have said no before you commited to buy it then possibly lost out if you had realised you had !!!!!!ed up?

    I think not

You should have been quicker and had the information far closer to hand and made sure the salesman didnt dissapear on you to serve someone else

Whilst its frustrating I dont think you can expect it reserved whilst you possibly decide its the right one

I appreciate that it must have been infuriatingly frustrating to have the machine swiped from under your nose, but although you might have been the first one to show an interest in buying the machine, in all fairness, the woman was the first person to confirm she wanted it and to hand over her money. If you decided it was the wrong machine, he'd have just turned away a sale to these ladies. And the woman might have been in earlier and shown an interest before you even turned up, therefore by your logic was entitled to it anyway.

Think of it this way, if it was a reduced cake in a supermarket and you were looking at it on the shelf deciding if the reduction in price justified the calories, and someone else comes along and puts it in their basket, are you more entitled to the cake than they are? Of course not.

As always timtims, unnecessarily rude and inappropriate comment.

Not quiet Pinkshoes. She was stood infront and did nothing. If I wanted it, I would have got it.

    What went wrong here?

No way could she had made it clear she wanted it. As the post above me says, the first person confirming they wanted it with cash got it. The op obviously didn't do this.

What happend if she wanted it whilst this went on, did she go mute?

complain! about what, that a salesperson sold someone something?
I'd love to see that letter :rotfl:

Because it's really rude! The salesperson KNEW that she wanted to buy it, so should have at least asked if she wanted it before selling it to someone else!

If I worked for headquarters, I'd be furious that a salesperson was so rude to a customer.

Well good for you, but not everyone can be confrontational like that. Some people find it very difficult. I too would have said something and kicked up a fuss, but I know most my friends wouldn't!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

All we know for the is the salesperson knew someone else wanted to buy it. So why is it rude selling it to them? If you read between the lines theres already more than enough to work out the op hadn't made it clear they wanted it. It's hardly confrontational saying "actually, I'll have it".

Can no one else see the other obvious thing the salesperson has bound to have considered?

If he hadn't have sold it to the other people and kept it for someone who did know whether they actually wanted it whats the betting the other people would end up on this forum complaining they wanted to buy a washing machine that was on display but the salesperson wouldn't sell it!

Thats just as likely to happen and if it did exactly the same people on here would be backing the other customers up (when they worded it in their favour) saying how poor service it was not being sold a washing machine etc etc !

I am going to vote for.................
    Dithering....
The salesman asked you if you wanted it - you dithered and "...carried on looking at the machine (opening door, and powder tray checking drum for whatever, looking in manual etc)"...
The old dinks didn't dither but said to the salesperson We will take it, at which point you had not confirmed you wanted it so it was sold to the first cutomer with a fistfull of money.

how did the salesperson know that, when the OP herself didn't know if she wanted to buy it and that it was the correct model. sorry but in my book that's like saying I'll think about it.

To be honest, the salesperson's job is to sell things. They don't care who buys it so long as someone does. I don't really think it is the job of a salesperson to put across your point of view - I can't imagine someone working in a shop saying to me 'Well, I think that person over there might want to buy this, even though they just saw you come over and ask about it and said nothing to you themself, so I can't sell it to you in case they do'.

If I was that salesperson, I would assume that the appearance of other customers after the same product would galvanise you into action - even if I had been showing it to you, I would take your failure to intervene and say 'Actually, I have decided to take it' as a sign that you either weren't sure or weren't interested. As you said, you were still looking at it after they had actually purchased it, which suggests to me that the salesperson wasn't aware of how interested you were. You may have thought you made it clear, but when something like this happens, you have to jump in quick. If you didn't say anything then why would the salesperson intervene?

I can see your frustration, but it comes down to brass neck - you didn't want it enough to 'fight' for it (as it were) and they wanted it enough to blaze in and get it. I have sometimes found in the past that my politeness has lost me a deal, and learnt from it - I have a feeling this might be one of those situations.

Yes, a sales person's job is indeed to sell things.

I guess we just live in a world today where manners count for nothing, and shops care more about money and profit than their customers.

Out of common courtesy, the sales assistant should have said to the other people that they were just showing the appliance to someone else, but they could have it if the first person didn't want it.
