Warning - Ulster Bank Card £23 Charge

Well I am pretty unimpressed with Ulster Bank at the moment. Having just closed my card after paying off the balance (free BT) I now have a charge of £23 from the Irish Govt which apparently is the charge for having a card!!

I am shocked and disgusted at this especially as I am a UK consumer and Ulster Bank never mentionned this and there is only a very vague reference to 'any duty, tax or other charge levied on the account by any competent authority'.

So in future I guess this is a warning to anyone thinking it would be a free balance transfer to this account. It won't - having the card will cost you £23!!!

I'm pretty sure the tax is only payable to if you're a resident of Eire. It doesn't have anything to do with BT's.

Edit : Read here for all the info about it.

Yes this sounds like a mistake.

If you are not resident in the Republic of Ireland, then why should you pay a charge to their Government - you have to pay enough to our Government as it is !!

I'd phone them up and query it, I'm sure its a mistake.

    Good Luck

    Thanks for your replys.

I'm going to phone them up and get it removed ASAP. Makes you wonder how many other UK residents might get the charge as well without noticing.

Oh and when I phoned the first time around, I was told that its a Govt charge and there's nothing they can do about it. Lucky that I am persistant and didnt take that for an answer.

    Not good.

I've just phoned Ulster Bank again to ask for the removal again stating the new facts I have from the Irish revenue website.

I was told again that it is a Govt charge that they cannot remove. When I said that I wasn't liable to pay this I was told that they now charge this to all accounts.

I complained again and they have taken my number and are getting back to me within the next 24hrs (hopefully) with an answer.

Maybe it's time that Martin was made aware of this as it looks like it'll affect more than just myself?

Isn't Ulster Bank being in Northern Ireland part of the UK to begin with as far as their financial systems are concerned?

Curious to hear more on this, I've a 0% deal running with them at the moment, still a few months to run yet before I'd be clearing it.

Ulster Bank is available both North and South of the border, so I don't know if they have seperate systems or what. It is part of the RBS group though, so you'd think they'd know that England isn't in Ireland!

dinkylou, let us know what they say, fingers crossed

Is this an Ulster Bank card, issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland or the Ulster Rugby card, which is a completely separate animal run by the Bank of Ireland?
