Maybe people are too polite on all the other forums I'm a member of over the years.
Anyway, I'll go and read the Icelandic threads and stop bothering everyone.0 -
Moved a large part of my finance into KE about 2 weeks ago. Excellent online and telephone service so far. Whilst on the phone discovered KE have been in the UK in the corporate market since 2000 and have just opened up to we private investors in Jan this year. All seems ok so far and more than happy to bank online as I've been telephone banking etc since the mid 90's0

Lenfo - your problem is that you are one of approximately a dozen new posters in the last few weeks that have posed virtually the same query. When the initial query has been responded to, the OP has come back with an argument. Now, this has become very wearying which is why you have been informed about various other threads on the subject.
Now, I generally confine myself to a couple of quick lines but other posters like ianmr65 have actually addressed themselves to each question quite fully and have given responses of several paragraphs. So, their patience is sorely tried when a new poster comes along and seemingly

a) can't be bothered to look back to check
b) come up with arguments which make us all suspect that you are not as naive as you seem in this debate.0 -
Well I never! I did a search for 'Kaupthing' and didn't get back much, so I did try.
Really, i did the same and there's all of 300 posts covering every possible aspect of that bank's opertion here in the UK.baby_boomer wrote: »And please remember that there's no such thing as a stupid question........
.....even about Icelandic banks (sorry BB)
The point in general is true, but the point i was making was that Lenfo chose the post which was the most general, and asked a very ill-considred question, leading from that.
He might have asked any number of pertinant questions leading from the responses. Instead he posited the only question he did ask in a way that could be read as an attack on Goldfinger, which is how i took it.
If he had asked 'why do you think the daily mail articles are garbage', and tried to defend them, or some such, it would have lead to a debate.
Comparing Kaupthing or any bank to NR in your third post implies lack of reaserch, trolling, dailymail speak, and possible hedge fund rumour mongering.0 -
[quote=So should I be wary of putting my money into Kaupthing and forego the attractive interest rate and go for a safer, say, Bradford & Bingley offering 6.4%?

Have you not heard, B & B are considered a bit of a risk at the moment?.
Alliance & Leicester too come to that! Kaupthing Edge are listed on the Financial Services web site as being safe up to the £35k limit.0 -
And you don't have to save with any of them!
Martin's article on savings safety is very careful to distinguish between
a) what the compensation schemes will cover and
b) predicting which banks or building societies are at risk.
He decides that b) is a mugs game (on the grounds that no-one really knows who is at risk) which enables him to continue to recommend the top rates as long as he's checked out the compensation packages in the even of a bankruptcy.
Many pensioners attending building society AGMs this year don't want the uncertainty of having to rely on a compensation scheme. They'd prefer to save with a safe institution. Some people are more cautious than others. It's a question of temperament as well as your financial situation.
As Martin's article effectively concludes, it's your choice with your money.0 -
