Tips on tarting up a house to sell

Hi,
My OH is selling their house so that we can buy somewhere together (I will be a 1st time buyer as I currently rent.)

Please can anyone provide me with any tips on aesthetic things that we should concentrate on to make the house sell quicker (and for a better price I guess too)

Your assistance would really be appreciated. Thanks.

im doing exactly that at the moment, painting all the walls in ivory lace, woodwork in white gloss, laying new laminate flooring (old floor was from the 60s never been looked after, least of all by me). have got loads of boxes from big yellow storage, have removed loads of book shelves and trinkets and have put it in the garage, will be washing the curtians, cleaning the bathroom within an inch of its life, will be painting my old flat pack 'orange' pine bedroom furniture white to freshen up and making as much floor space as possible. hopefully be putting it on the market in about a months time

Nothing in a place it shouldn't be - ie. if you are presenting the house, the only things on show should be things for show or practical items - books on bookcases, ornaments, lights, kettle whatever.

No dishcloths, no papers lying around in piles.

Turn the light on in every room when conducting viewings and make sur ethe place is immaculately clean for every viewing. Freeze yourslef by opening all the windows beforehand for a while.

All well and good but I ended up selling my flat to the one person who turned up unannounced - I'd just emptied the washing machine and last night's beer bottles and half eaten pizza were still lying about. Who knows, maybe sometimes it is better keeping it looking like its been lived in?

Isn't it funny how people only ever finish the niggling jobs and make the house look super ... when they're leaving it :)
  • We were the same, sold our house to a guy that came round with about 10 mins warning.
Sink full of dishes, not hoovered, smell of fish from tea the night before. Ghastly!! But he put an offer in from go and we sold. If the house is right doesn't matter if it's clean or not!

But must admit I've never been so paranoid about clutter as when we were selling:D
I like to take one day at a time....but quite often several days attack me at once...
  • Clear the clutter and splosh magnolia everywhere by all means, but don't make the place look too bland or unlived in.

Consider who you hope to sell too. Clearout all the crap to make rooms appear bigger make it clean and tidy looking.

IMO nothing worse than going to a viewing booked days in advance to find mess and dust. turns me right off

Drop the price 15%, cook a loaf of bread and put you coffee machine into overdrive. :D
