The classification you get is far, far more important than the university. It doesn't matter if you get a 2.2 from Oxford, you didn't reach the 2.1 cut-off point and so your application (if it specifically asks for a 2.1 or above) will be binned. Whereas a first from Oxford Brookes won't.

Sorry but you are being a bit dumb - it does rely on the lecturers (which tend to stay similar for a while) and facilities, but has nothing to do with the students as one year might be excellent and 15% get 1sts 80% get 2:1's and the rest get 2:2's and another year may not be as good with say 1% getting 1sts, 9% getting 2:1's and the rest 2:2 and below - doesn't make the uni any less prestigous or the mark from there less worth because that years intake weren't as good.

    Wrong

Students also contribute to the league table.

but factor in the companies that only recruit from oxbridge and suddenly it's all a level playing field!

either way, this summer will be a bad year for graduate recruitment because the economy isn't looking so strong - everyone graduating this year needs to be prepared for the fact that there are less jobs this time around and therefore competition will be higher.

Unless you are wanting to be a barrister or working in investment banking, there are few companies which only recruit from Oxbridge. Even those companies would probably be wanting at least a 2.1.

I agree about graduate recruitment. Sadly there are too many people who think that a degree is a golden ticket to a job. It will be the people who have used their time at university wisely (work experience, especially relevant work experience, and being active in clubs/societies) who will have a hope.

i graduated from cambridge in 2002, when a lot of graduate entry schemes severely reduced numbers and i think you'd be surprised how many companies shrink their campus presence when the economy takes a knock. there are also more places than you'd think that only take candidates from a limited set of universities seriously. now, i wouldn't want to work for one, and i don't think it's fair, but it happens more than you realise!
