Inherited o2 contract phone - how do I use it as PAYG?

I have never had a mobile phone so please bear with me.

My partner died suddenly in January and he had a Nokia 6300 on contract with o2 and was paying around £30 a month on DD.

I received a reminder last month and rang o2 who were very helpful. They cancelled his contract, wrote off the debt and gave me a couple of days to make a note of the numbers in the phone.

When I switch on the phone now it says 'SIM card registration failed'. and none of the buttons work.

My question is, if I want to use this phone very occasionally as a PAYG, on UK holidays etc where there is no landline, what do I need to do?

I am assuming that I will need to get a new SIM card, but will the phone now be locked or blocked?

It should work ok with an o2 sim card. (Borrow a mates to confirm this - putting the sim in your phone won't damage either the sim or the phone).

Normally O2 contract handset are unlocked, so inserting any free PAYG SIM will work. e.g. O2 here Orange here
