  • Legality then office basic would be the best bet; you can get it cheap now from the Microsoft website. But I don’t think you gona get it free if you want to keep on the right side of the law.

One option might be to get a copy of Microsoft Office XP. This is about 6 years old but has most of the features of the latest version. You can find it pretty cheaply on ebay - although beware pirate copies.

You can then download the Office 2007 compatibility pack (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923505/) which will allow Office XP to open Office 2007 documents.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Are you sure the files you are trying to open and edit are not PDF files?

These are normally locked to read only and can be opened with Adobe Acrobat Viewer (free from here). If you want to edit it, you'll need to purchase Adobe Acrobat.

A lot of companies use the PDF format to send out their job application forms. It has nothing to do with MS Office or OpenOffice.

I thought exactly the same as fitshase reading through this. In fact I'm sure there was a thread a week or two ago with that exact situation.

Three options if it is the case.

    1. Buy Adobe Acrobat but it's expensive and probably won't be needed again
    2. Find a freeware pdf writer
    3. Ask them to send them as .doc files, this was the solution in the other thread I mentioned.

K60sav can you post the exact filename including the filetype, the 3 letters after the dot, please ?
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
