Have a look for a file call scanpst.exe on your machine, scan the pst with it and it should repair it. Once repaired create another PST and copy about half the data out of this pst into a new one. Once that is done goto your options, find the personal folder and compact it. This is going to take you a long time though. If this is all too much effort you might have to revert to an older pst that is less than 2GB

Thanks , I can do the scanpst bit, but once I have done that, how do I copy part of the outlook.pst to a new file????

You create the new pst in outlook then you just drag and drop the folders over, it will probably appear to hang and will probably take a long time but it will be working away.
  • You cannot do that with scanpst. You first need to download a tool to truncate the pst file so that it's less than 2GBs. You will almost definately lose data from the pst file.

Just a thought, if I went out and bought Outlook 2007 , would that solve my problems , would I be able to open the file then>???
  • Outlook 2007 has a limit of 20GBs, but without trying it I can't say whether it will open the pst file as it is. You may still need to run those tools on it first.

As the .pst is a database file it fills up with white space aswell which when defragmented deflates the file, if you upgrade to outlook 2003 this is not so much of a problem, you can use upto 16GB. Try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832925
