Hi all,
I am trying to set up my AOL internet account on my new computer, Windows Vista, but during the set up process I get the message "cannot detect Modem". I have tried 'looking for it' in the files as only a non-techie can do (which is not much). What shall I do? Where is my missing modem!!!
Thanks for all help.

Is this an old modem? Is it actually compatible with Vista? Why aren't you using a router, which has no compatibility issues and AOL give them away free?

Hi. This is a PC I have just bought. I was using AOL 8 on my old one. When I asked AOL what I need to to set up an account on this PC they just sent me a CD AOL version 9.OVR. I thought that the PC came with a modem. My old OC was Windows 98 so you see I am not very up on technology.

Do you have a router or are you plugging your machine into your phone line?

    Are you talking about dial-up?

Personally I would never install any ISP's software on PC of mine, especially AOL. Just create a DUN using the wizard. You will need the number to dial, your screen name and password.

EDIT: Just a though, if this is a brand new Vista machine, does it have a dial-up modem fitted? Look in Device Manager under Modems.

Has your new machine got a built in modem? Goto start, settings, control panel, phone and modem options. Double click on it, there should be a tab that says modems. Click on it and tell me what it says in this box.

Yes it is dial-up. Lisa I stupidly thought that PC's came with the modem in it? I don't know if my new machine has one. I will follow your instructions TonyLisa and see what it sya. Unfortunately I will have to turn off this PC that I am using and set up my new PC in its place(which I am throughly fed up of doing) As I only have one set of sockets to use.
Expresso where do I find the Device manager?

Modems will show up where I pointed you to, you don't need the device manager yet. If you do goto start, settings, control panel, system, device manager
