Sky Digibox problem - or the card?

Our digibox has been playing up over the last couple of weeks.
It wont turn on or respond to the remote but if you try again in say 15/20 minutes - it works fine - what's that all about?
We have bought a new remote and done all the switching off and software downloads. It's like the machine now needs 15 minutes to think about turning itself on. Once it starts working it's fine.
Now is this a machine problem or the card? My husband said we should get a new card from Sky but I'm not convinced. Do sky charge for a new card?

Have you tried speaking to sky? Call them on 08442 41 41 41 and explain the situation, it is probably your reciever box though.0

Almost certainly the Sky Receiver, an easy way to find out if it is your card or not is quite simple, just remove the card and see what happens.;)0 -
You could try this
Customers often contact us when their Sky Receivers behave erratically.
Forcing an update of the system software will often clear a multitude of problems. Here's how:
1) Locate the button on the front of the Receiver, named "Back Up".
2) Press and hold down the "Back Up" button...
3) WHILE HOLDING IT DOWN, disconnect then reconnect the power to the receiver (do not release the back-up button yet).
4) About 20 seconds after reconnecting power, all four coloured lights will illuminate on the front of the receiver.
If the TV is switched to Sky a message will also appear on screen.. "Updating System Software".
5) Only after the four lights illuminate and the message appears should you release the back-up button.
6) After about 10 minutes the reciever will return to "standby" (ie. red LED only).
7. Leave the receiver in standby for 1 minute as it carries out a self check.
8). Switch receiver out of standby (green LED illuminates).
9) The receiver will take a few minutes "Searching For Listings".
10) Enjoy.0 -
That may well work for many problems, however I doubt that it will effect a cure on this one, as the problem doesn't seem to be software related.
Worth a try, and of course I may be wrong.
Did the OP try pulling out the Sky Card ???0 -
Some models have specific problems. For example, most Thomson Sky Digiboxes suffer from power supply failure. Exchange PSUs are available. What's your make and model number?0

yes, we tried the software download last week with no luck and have reinserted the card. We're going to look on ebay and get another box.
Moneymaker - yep it's a Thomson but not sure of the model number but can find out if it will help?0 -

How long you been with Sky, are you on a fairly high subscription package?
If so, phone Sky and go straight through to cancel, when they ask why, tell them the box has failed and there's no point in paying a subscription when the box don't work, they'll probably offer half price £30 call out, tell them, no etc go through with the cancellation and they'll 95% likely to offer a free call out, they'll swap the box out.
If you are only using it for the 200+ free channels, then that won't work. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

Just phone Sky and tell them to cancel your services because you don't see the point of paying for a service if you haven't a working box. They might offer half price fix, push then and they should fix for free.
However remember the box is your property, you don't rent or lease from Sky, you wouldn't expect Sky to come out and repair or replace your TV for free, nor would you expect BBC Radio or Talk Sport to come out and repair your radio for free. So you need to put things into perspective. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
