Tree ID thread

Hi -
Can anyone help me identyfy my tree? It's Twice as tall a my house, Very thin and not too bushy, its leaves are long and thin and i've just discovered theres some little what look like nuts in clusters on it, there seemes to be little 'caps' on the nuts a bit like mini acorns cap, that the squirrels keep chucking down on us! Or does anyone know a good website that can identify trees? I've tried a few but nothing looks similar!

    Hi All

My neighbour has a tree in their front garden which is quite close to thier house (approx 5 mtrs) and ours but I'm not sure what type of tree it is?

I first thought it was a cherry tree but it has never produced any fruit so maybe it's not or maybe it's an ornamental???

Anyway, It is approx 4 mtrs tall, the trunk is about the size of a dinner plate (at the base) it blossomed about 3 weeks ago with small white flowers but it also has lots of light green leaves on too.

Any Ideas what it could be?

Thanks Lord Gardener - Had a good look and can't seem to find it on either site.......

Maybe I should take a photo and see if anyone can identify it then?

Reason I am enquiring now is I've just brought a Stella Cherry Tree and wondered if it would maybe help this tree to produce fruit (if it is a cherry that is)

    Hmmmmmmm

Sounds like a plum of some sort judging by flowering time and flower

If no others in area then it would not be fertilised & hence no fruit, some are self fertile but if it is a plum then it obviously is not in that group

When my tree looked like this in August, I thought it was going to turn out to be something exciting, or edible :D

    Garden001.jpg

I have been disappointed :( All the berries dropped off.. even the birds don't bother with them...

Here's the tree in bloom now. (Doesn't smell very nice)

Here's one of its humungous spikes
    Garden014.jpg

Here's the odd hawthorn-like thing growing out of the base of the trunk
    Garden015.jpg

Here's one of the seedlings (the berries germinate like crazy) that I put in a pot when I still thought it was an interesting tree
    Garden018.jpg

So... can anyone finally pin down what it is?

If it's a blackthorn, wouldn't you get sloes?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
