Wedding dress advice

I'm having mine made for me by a dressmaker here in Blackpool. It's a 50's style, using my mum's wedding dress for the fabric....well, I didn't like it last time I got married
and I felt it was a sentimental way of having my parents with me on the day. 0 -
Hi Lorne
got mine in Coast, I think its fab and as wedding as I wanted for the second time round in a registry office. Its pink and chiffony with a matching little bag, and a very simple diamond hairband.
Thank you for the advice, I'm hoping to pop into a bigger coast this weekend to have a nosey, I was in their little debenhams consession on Tuesday which was tiny.
Your dress sounds lovely and I love the idea of the hairband, I'm not wanting a veil or anything too fussy and that sounds perfectThanks for the advice Martin! :money:Member no. 920 - Proud to be dealing with our debts0 -

What a lovely idea, I am really taken with the idea of a 50's dress. I hope you don't mind me asking but is it expensive to get one made? I'm going to try and scout one down in coast or monsoon but if it is reasonable to get one made.....Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:Member no. 920 - Proud to be dealing with our debts0 -

Still have the white one... Would of flogged it on eBay but they got wise and stopped it before I got chance... Never been good at jumping on bandwagons...
I sold mine on eBay
but it was before all the fuss and I was honestly selling it as a piece of 80s memorabilia, I needed the money as we were moving house!
Back to wedding dresses, people who get dressmakers to make their dresses, how did you find them? I've done a couple of very quick searches on Google but they tended to bring back expensive looking designers. I'm sure I read somewhere asking in fabric shops for recommendations. I know I need to put more effort into the search but thought I'd just ask for any tips!Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

How about searching on yell.com or looking in your local paper?Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended

Another option is to ask in bridal shops, where I bought mine from doesn't do alterations but they have 2 recommended seamstresses, I imagine if you're skilled enough to adjust a dress you can make one....
I think I've seen someone suggest asking in dry cleaners and habberdashers (not that there's many of them anymore) for recommendations.A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...My Fathers Daughter wrote: »Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

Thanks for the tips ladies, yell was my next stop, just thought I'd ask for any tips for something other than the obvious.
Actually, the saying right under your nose probably applies here, I work a couple of doors down from a sewing machine shop/haberdashers. The women in there are a bit scary though, although their boss is often rude to them in front of customers so I'll be a bit forgiving of that!Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

Pricewise I'm guessing about £200-£300 because it involves unpicking mum's dress & cutting & making up into the new dress so it will be quite time-consuming...but they advertise wedding dresses from £199. It's quite easy to find a dressmaker up here....this one is where I found my dress for my 40th party, and they make costumes for Funny Girls too, always have gorgeous frocks in their window, which is on a bus route!0 -
Thanks Floss, hope you don't think I was being too nosey, was just really interested in seeing whether it was an option. I've got a weekend free mid May so I'm going to do some research. Really appreciate the infoThanks for the advice Martin! :money:Member no. 920 - Proud to be dealing with our debts0
