If you have the cash I would suggest a Samson Zoom H4. £200
Decent quality stereo mics and records in various qualities (including MP3).
Records to SD card and has USB interface.
Runs off 2AA batteries.
The beauty of the H4 is that it accepts XLR connections , so if you want an external professional mic you can plug straight in.
The interface is a bit tricky but works.
