If you have vista, go to start, programs, accessories, sound recorder and use the built in microphone which most new laptops have.

As long as there is a built in microphone that is, most new laptops will have one.

I use "Audiocorder" on my iBook laptop.
The built-in microphone is Ok if sound levels are high but I prefer to use an external microphone connected through a Griffin iMic USB adapter.

I followed those instructions and a box popped up to say an audio device could not be found on when I clicked on OK a sound box coms up with headings on top playback, record, sounds. I clicked on record and it says realtek high definition audio not plugged in. I do have vista and have just bought this sony laptop. Any ideas?

    Sit nearer your telly!
Just joking :rotfl: Goto, start, settings, control panel, sound, recording. Configure your microphone.

Job done go and make yourself a congratulatory cup of tea.

Any good external dictaphone microphone will be fine, most come in lapel sized clip ons, some with a tiny box pre-amp (half way along the cable) containing a single AA battery.
