Sub-£20 Sony Mp3 player bargains

What's the deal?

Uber-cheap unbranded Mp3 players have been available for a while. Yet now you can get their name-brand (Sony, no less) counterparts at knock down prices too. Here's a run-down of the cheapest:

Where?

As a rough guide when choosing, remember 1GB equates to around 250 songs.
  • Sony NW-003, 1GB £15.49 delivered

This little Sony player's just £9.99 at web discounter bigpockets, but a hefty £5.49 postage charge makes the deal less impressive. A few colours are available at the same price: Blue, Violet & Pink. On the upside, it's pretty and packs an FM radio and the ability to play most common formats (wma, mp3, Sony's Atrac). The major draw though is its quick-rechargeable lithium battery, which should be good for up to 20 hours playback. On the downside it relies on Sony's awkward SonicStage program to manage music.

The unfortunate £5.49 postage charge can be skipped if you add one of the site's free postage items to your order. Most of these latter are more pointless than a spent pencil, but there are a couple of consumables worth looking at.
  • Top Deal: Sony NWDB105WC, 2GB, £17.99 delivered.

Play.com's offering this little player, which is effectively the newer incarnation of the one above, for £17.99 with free postage. In addition to its twice-as-big 2GB capacity, it's also allows you to drag and drop music files from your computer straight to it, making transfers easy and negating the need for Sony's clunky SonicStage software. It's rechargeable, and features voice recording capability. On the downside, it doesn't include an FM radio, and some have repoted it to be a bit chunky and slow on the uptake.
  • Sony NWA 805 2GB with video playback, £19.99 in-store.

This slightly bigger-sized player's on offer at a very select few Argos branches, so you'll need to hunt if you want one. As well as playing your fave choons, you can watch videos on its 2" screen. Again you'll have to get to grips with SonicStage to manage content though.
Don't care about brands?

As I mentioned above, it's possible to get unbranded MP3/4 players with higher capacity even cheaper. Ebuyer's a good place to start looking, but take care to read the reviews first; these can be a mixed bag.

Please remove the session ID part of the link - I very nearly accidentally ordered 11 of these because 10 other people had used the same link

I would not order the NWDB105 from play.com, its chunky, slow and has 12hr max battery life, seems like a generation or 2 gap between latest ones.... Sending mine back....

Would it be okay for a child though, do you think? Just want something basic and simple.

You'll be lucky to find any Sony NWA 805's in Argos! Did a 150 mile radus search and no store had stock. Pity, looks like a good player!

Think you'll be lucky to find the NWA805 in Argos now, as that deal was originally posted on HUKD forum last Friday and most branches sold out by Saturday (I managed to find a couple for myself and GF). Incidently they turned out to be the newer NWZA815 models that don't need Sonicstage:)
