  • Composting is addictive...and it is useful to have two - when you've filled one, you start on the second one and leave the first to mature.

Suiggle, you will definetly need two compost bins or as many as you have room for.At the height of summer if you have lawns that need cutting you will easily fill them plus you will need to turn the first one into the second one after a couple of months and then start again. After six months or so you should be ready to empty the first one..

Make sure you place them where they can get a bit of sun as that will help with the decomposition, but if it starts to dry out you can always add some water to it to speed it up but not too much.

You can add plenty of stuff to your bins except meat, cat and dog feaces or perennial weeds.

Nettles without the roots are a good activator as is fresh grass but the grass will need mixing with other stuff to help it all rot down.

Good Luck and let us know how you get on

The only thing with teabags is that the outer paper takes awhile to rot down so i tend to split them and take out the used tea and discard the outer bag. however if you have two compost bins you have longer for things to rot down.

you shouldnt get rats/mice as long as you dont put any cooked food stuffs or anything that would attract vermin. I have never had any problems with vermin.

Well saying that..luckily i stopped the nice elderly lady from next door from using my bin last year.......she asked if she could add her peelings as she didnt get much...yes no problems i said....then when i went to add some stuff...i spied something suspect...on closer inspection I saw bones

I popped next door to enquire...

Oh yes she said I made a duck stew with some left over bones...had some left...thought it would do your compost the world of good!

I had to politely ask her not to add anything else!!
