dairy/wheat free

Options
I have just found out I am dairy and wheat intolerant - I need to cut out dairy completely but can alternate the wheat every few days. Is anyone else on here intolerant? If so can you help me with recipe ideas please!?!

Thank you

I'm dairy-free - only slightly intolerant but choose to opt out - there are loads of great recipes on here :) :

    Dairy-free Desserts
    Gluten-free stuff
    Dairy and gluten free cake
    Vegan recipe thread

That ought to get you started... it may be worth investigating alternative sources for any nutrients you currently derive from dairy (e.g. calcium, B12, D...) as direct substitutes aren't always satisfactory, so depending what you're used to eating you may have to open your mind a bit too!

Best of luck - it must be harsh not having the choice :(

Hi - I'm wheat intolerant and just don't have anything with pasta, pastry or bread. I'm cooking for husband and two teenagers as well, but just adapt my portion or have something different with veg etc I've cooked for all of us.

I avoid the substitute breads etc in the supermarket - for lunch I take a brown rice salad to work or have oatcakes and cheese and fruit.

    Good luck!

thank you - i will have a good look when i get in tonight - but am still worried that i am going to struggle to do dairy AND wheat free!! thanks for all your help! x
  • dairy free isn't too hard. We have just managed to replace milk with soya or rice milk (rice milk is much sweeter tasting). Butter with Vitalite or Pure or some cheap baking marge. Cheese with vegan mozerella - only for topping pizza/putting omelettes and other melting purposes none of the vegan cheese is nice for eating except the tofu cream cheese.

No help wheat free, except that flap jacks and meringues are what I do for sweet things when we have people who are wheat free round.

Some people who have problems with wheat are ok with spelt flour in baking.
There are also good wheat-free flours out there but they are quite expensive

I have a friend who has to exclude both from her diet (as well as things like coconut, banana, chocolate... oh yes, and meat/fish!).

Like any dietary change, it takes some getting used to, but once you're familiar with what's available you wonder what all the fuss was about :)

People always say to me "oo, bet you can't go out to a restaurant then" - I get invited out to dinner about once a week and I've never failed to get something I'm happy with from the menu (Asian food is the easiest!).

Morrisons have the best "free from" range I've come across for my friend - things like Bakewell tarts that exclude wheat and dairy - but they're not exactly OS! Personally, I almost never use dairy "substitutes" - just soya milk for baking and soya cream for making chocolate truffles .

Soya milk, soya cream, soya custard.........its all available, and some is even quite nice :D

Morrisons and Tesco both do an ice-cream that is free from EVERYTHING. Lactose free, gluten free, cholesterol free. Its really yummy, but I've not read the ingredients, don't think there can be much natural in there.

The only problem I have with dairy is that theres no substitute for cathedral city chees, and sometimes I just have to eat it. Also theres no real good substitute for milk chocolate. I'm training myself to like the dark stuff, but its just not the same.

You're right, its just getting used to it. I have used soya milk for ages anyway and have never eaten much bread so thats not an issue. The prob is I love food and eating and new recipes and feel a bit depressed that I cant eat what I used to! But I know I will find some nice/tasty things that I can make. It's all so expensive though! But am going to try not necessarily substituting with the expensive alternatives. Will definitely try Morrisons!! Went to Sainsburys last night and the Free From shelves were bare!!!!!!!
