Hi all, my turn to ask a question;)
Does anybody have an idea of how much to paint the out side of a 3 bed smallish semi? labour only, I supply the paint.
End wall is a tall gable wall upto ridge. No window frames to be done, but the window reveals and cills are cement and will need to be done in gloss white. The outside is very roughcast rendered, so will need either thick brush, or long pile roller. I am guessing two coats to cover. Facias and soffits to be done.

Planned to get ours done when we moved in and phoned round for quotes and was shocked. Average for a 3 bedroom semi was £600 for walls and pipework. Cheapest was £400 but wasnt too keen as the guys said he didnt really do outsides and could i lend him a ladder.
So I left it and thought sod it it can stay like that.
About a year ago the old dear next door had hers done and i asked her how much it cost her and she said ' ooh its very expensive, far more than it used to be. He has been doing my house every five years and this year its cost me £100. When he first came over it was only £25 but that was a few years ago.
Bloke took a look at my new company car and upped prices to £120 for my place (he paid for all paint) and I said YES YES YES.
So to answer orignal question - Painting is one of those jobs which most of us could do ourselves but the height and ladders puts most people off.
So shop around as they will charge what they can get away with.
Also ask how long it will take, whats their daily labour rate, what paint will they be using and how many coats.
When you figure out some of them are charging a £400 a day labour then they dont get so surprised when you tell them to sod off.0 -
WE did our own last year, costs us 3x large Dulux weathershield (trade paint) and some large rollers on a large rod and did it ourselves for less than £200 including buying some ladders from B&Q to get to the top do do under the roof struts
We did it in two coats and took us about a good week in all including some patching up on the rendering and sanding. Make good some bricks as its half rendered and half bricked. Some bricks were slightly chipped so we patched up with Poyfilla quick dry cement (its waterproof)0 -
Thank you. It's not that I cant do it, it's that I dont want to do it. Working all week in the Trade, sometimes means I dont want to do it of a weekend as well, and to be honest I dont like painting - especialy extremly roughcast walls. It can at times also work out cheaper to get somebody else in who does that line of work all day long, then to take time off, take half as long again and not do it as good.

Hello Mr chips
1, FRont, back and side? or just front or back with side?
2, is it new render or has it had previous coats?
3, Are you going with a similar colour or something completely different?
4, How much prep is involved? What condition are the sills in and how harsh has the weather been to them?
5, Any mould or anything that may need to be treated as part of the prep?
6, is it specificallyglos you wish to use on the reveals and sills? as long as primed - masonry paint will do a great if not better job and will cut down the cost of drying times.
7, being traded is the job going to need a tower?
Going by the basics and labour only no supply i would recon around £500 - if there's prep involved - allow for £600
Hope this has been of help - without viewing the property its so very hard to say but those fig's are a step in the right direction

Hi Avensis (why the Mr chips ref?)
1 Front, Tall side, and back.
2 Had previous coats, but very rough cast finish
3 Probably something along same lines, certainly not extreme
4 I would jet wash walls first, but windows cills which are cement need scraping right back and poss filling
5 No
6well, it seems to be gloss now so probably gloss again.
7 No it's my own house, dont work on sites, dont care how it's done, LOL

My neighbour had thiers done, a semi, just the walls, guttering, pipes, etc, just straight forward emulsion, and they paid £900, but this is in greater london
Exteriors are always more expensive, and more so if they hire a tower, as health and saftey does not allow painters to use ladders now, (not supposed too), but I would say in your case, being in Wales, £500 - £600 is quite a fair price.0 -
Just as a matter of interest, once it's done, how long do you expect it to last before it needs doing again?
Ours is a one storey place so we will attempt to do it ourselves.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
I think it depends on preparation, the paint, conditions etc
Most of the manufacturers claim the paint lasts 10+ years but I would be surprised if it does particularly in exposed places like window sills, corners of houses etc0 -
Dulus and sandtex both guarentee for many years, but you need to follow their instructions to the letter. That said, the front of our house gets covered within weeks of it being painted with road dust and refinery emmisions, but a quick jet wash normally restores it, but this years it's one year too many;-)
