Well it's working, so suspect it is Virgin slowness currently.

If you go into the router config, you should be able to find the sync rate, which should be nearer 8meg.

Thats about a 1meg connection, something they dont even supply as the least is 2meg nowadays.

I'm supposedly on the 8meg service but rarely ever get more than 1 meg.

Sounds like I'll have to get a new router and more imprtantly someone to come and make sure it is fitted properly.

I did the test again and this time I got :

    Download Speed: 520 kbps (65 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 360 kbps (45 KB/sec )

Does the fact that I actually do have a connection make it more or less likely that I have a broken router?

I suspect a new router would be a waste of money, it's working now... They either work, or they don't, the config is either correct or it isn't. If your adsl light starts going again, it is more likely to be a BT/Virgin/phone line/filter problem.

    This is via BT line?

Did you run what I posted in the first post I posted, did you change the channel to 3 ????????????

Or are you reading posts without attempting to do what is posted?

I did do everything in your earleir posts, although I can see no reference to changing anything to a 3?

Channel 3 interferes with both 1 and 6, so not a good choice unless your airwaves are very crowded, and won't make any difference to wired connections, or dropping adsl lights.

OK, I unplugged power cable and then plugged it all back in again. It took a while to get all the lights back on and I had the error message that LAN was not operating (or something).

It took me a while to get back into MSE and I have just done a new test and this time my speeds are:

    Download Speed: 1993 kbps (249.1 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 338 kbps (42.3 KB/sec )

Thank you Browntoa. As a non techie it does all seem odd to me. The fact that I do have a connection virtually all the time puzzled me as I assumed if it was broken then my connection would simply disappear. I am also puzzled by the fact that some sites I can access and some I cannot, for example MSE is working fo rme, it is slow but then for me it usually is. I can also use Ebay but I struggle sometimes to get Google and a few other 'favourite' sites. It also struck me as odd, again as a non techie that the set up is the same I have been using for several years, so the Virgin help desk explanation that I had set it up wrongly didn't make sense. I have never had a quick conenction and over the months it has steadily got worse and worse, in fact it started to get worse as soon as I got the note to say I had been upgraded to 8 meg..although that might have been a co incidence.

    My latest speed test shows:

    Download Speed: 870 kbps (108.8 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 347 kbps (43.4 KB/sec )

I'm not quite sure where to go from here really, I could get someone in tomorrow or I could look at changing my ISP and going to someone who offer a router that they will support, I notice some give the router for free.

I'd ring up Linksys support and ask if the router will support 8 meg, if it does then the Virgin support team are talking out of their bottom
