i'm 26, male, with a 1992 golf 1.8 petrol worth not a lot £250? drive to work and back about 120 miles a week plus a little social use. 1 years official NCB.
have never made an insurance claim, only got 1 year ncb as the previous years were too long ago to use anymore.
last years quote was £278 from direct choice (they had me on their records from about 7 years ago and i had 2 year ncb with them)
no intention of claiming i'm a careful driver so i'm thinking is it possible to reduce the quote at all? the renewal price with direct choice has gone up to £290.
can i say i do less miles than i do, if i'm not going to claim then how will they know? any other tips on reducing it other than whats in martins article. i cant do anything with the job title as there arent any other options for me.
also i'd like to pay monthly, but this doesnt seem to be common with car insurance and i dont want a credit card to do it on, id like a DD, does anyone else do this?

yes you can say you do less miles than you do, however it will invalidate your insurance if you do so really its not worth it!
did direct choice quote you will the 2 years ncd from when you were with them before? or did it start again at 0 last year?
how many years on your renewal? was it 1 or 3?
make sure your checking the cashback sites after getting your best price doing the other steps- i got the wife's insurance down from nearly £500 to £270 (and it was with the same insurer as the renewal)
direct debit isnt always something that is offered, so if its a must for you then you might have to end up going with a higher price that offers it as opposed to a cheaper one that doesnt.
the big thing though is to tell the truth if you tell lies you might as well not bother getting the insurance as it wont be worth the paper its written on.0 -
On the information provided that's not a bad price TBH.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that the way to lower your premium is by misrepresenting the risk or not disclosing all the required information. No point in declaring an incorrect mileage otherwise the validity of your cover is jeopardised and you will not get indemnified if you are involved in a claim.
Paying in full rather than by instalments will save you 10-20% of the premium.0 -

what if someone hits you? what if your car is stolen or catches fire? (my sister's well maintained car caught light on the M6 once   )
it's not worth scrimping or defrauding on insurance - not everything is within your control.
(and plenty of careful drivers do have accidents - you need to ensure your liability is covered if you do):A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:A

well i've tried all the comparison sites on the car insurance page, but none have beaten the renewal quote i have from direct choice.
should i be happy with the premium increasing despite not having any claims?
maybei should call them and check through the details and see if they can bring it down to less than last year.
on the renewal quote it says 1 year so they havent officially taken into account my previous 2 years ncb. i think he just noticed it, and maybe that allowed him to apply a further reduction.
it seems like its not worth using monthly DD due to the extra cost, strange how other things give you discount for using DD.
what cashback sites can i use for car insurance ?
also - since doing online quotes i'm getting calls from 02089393900 which when called back is allen & allen insurance. they call for a few rings and if you answer they hang up. i spoke to someone there and i'm told they dont call out. i was a bit annoyed as i ticked the box to not recieve any communications.0 -

Electricity costs more too, so does gas, and bread, and eggs, and rent, and ......
Insurance costs often go up each year

yes this is true, BUT if the ncd is still building up - you would expect the increase in bonus to outweigh the cost of living increase, well I would0 -

he probably got a 25-30% discount as a new customer last year, and the 1st yrs ncb is equivalent to about that. so the discount may not actually have increased this year
that's pretty common.
plus at this end of the market, there's always going to be a minimum policy cost (you're not going to ever get car insurance for 50 quid!):A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:A

In this case, as the OP's renewal states 1 year NCD it's not at all unsual for it to be slightly than last year.
I suspect that the insurer offered an introductory discount equivalent to 1 year NCD. Of course, at renewal the OP has 1 year NCD but no introductory discount. So essentially the premium will have moved in line with inflation and general market rating changes.
Edite to add: looks like brazilianwax just beat me to it!0 -
Unfortunately insurance doesn't only go up by the cost of living. They factor in the increasing costs of claims & repairs which aren't included in RPI or cost of living calculationsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
