My local NCT runs baby CPR evenings as a fund raiser. £6 each or 2 parents for £10. Might be worth asking your local branch if they do similar.

Thats just awful and I am in tears reading about the little boy bringing Calpol.

A very good post. I will teach my little chap when he is old enough.

    Thank you!

We have diversified somewhat though and I hope people are getting my message about the baby monitors.

Of course, I'm sorry to go OT felicity! No amount of first aid training is going to help if you don't know that there is something wrong in the first place. So invest in a movement monitor!

I had a phone in the bedroom but was worried that ringing 999 would not help me quickly enough ...

Felicity, I will not try to take away from all the positives you did as a result of this horrifying event, but not phoning 999 ?

In any emergency situation, phoning 999 would have told you exactly what to do, and possibly have given your son life saving breaths when he could desparately have needed them.

Don't underestimate the brilliant people that are on the other side of the phone.

St Johns Ambulance has Badgers, a weekly club for 5 - 10 yr olds which will teach them first aid, how to call the emergency services and what information to give along with information on how to lead a healthy lifestyle, look after pets and lots of fun activities too.

And when they're older (12+) - youth organisations such as the Cadet Force teaches all levels of First Aid, from dialing 999 right through to carrying out CPR. Three young boys I know have just received medals for saving a gunshot victim who would otherwise have bled to death.

First Aid is so important, and I think every parent should attend a first Aid course.

OP - I'm glad your little boy is all right, it just goes to show how good those mats are.

My daughter stopped breathing several times during her first two weeks (don't worry she is now a strapping 6 year old) and we took turns watching her constantly during this time.
She would do it after being fed if she was layed down on her back. Her swallowing reflex didn't work properly and the milk would either regurgitate or pool in the back of her throat mixed with saliva etc and she would thrash about and turn blu very quickly. we would pick her up and turn her upside down and she would start to breathe again. we even used our own mouths to suck out the milk (not recommended but we were desperate)
We know that if we were out of the room when this happened we could have lost her. My advice - like others here is to watch your new born closely because I am sure many have been lost in this way.
In our case it was thought to be caused by a quick birth and the mucus in the lungs not being squeezed out during labour. I don't want to scare anyone but if this happens with you don't panic just gently turn them over and tap on their backs and they will start again. It worked for us luckily!
